The deposed President of the Maldives, Mohamed (Anni) Nasheed was just arrested. Minivan is reporting that the police have an arrest warrant for him – for charges relating to his sacking of a judge as President – but MDP party member Shauna Aminath has tweeted reports and photos from his arrest. As embedded above.
Anni was the democratically elected leader of the Maldives who was deposed in a coup. He is now campaigning in the upcoming elections and the coupists seem like they want to hold on to power by simply arresting him. Anni was a human rights defender who was repeatedly arrested during the decades long Gayoom dictatorship, loyalists of which seem to be running the government now.
