MP Dayasiri Jayasekera’s Music Video
Sri Lanka has a lot of entertainment personalities become politicians but few that went the other way. Mervyn Silva excluded, I guess. One politician that became a singer is MP Dayasiri Jayasekera. I’ve heard him speak and he seems like a capable lawyer and MP (UNP), and he’s also a pretty good singer, coming second place on the Mega Star show (bit of an odd ending, he probably should have been first). Above is his first music video, Sansare, via Lanka Help Magazine, via Kottu.
It’s not bad. A couple classic tropes, 1) older Sri Lankan singers usually get a ‘pinch hitter’ 2) it is the usual tragic love story, albeit way too predictable here. Pinch hitter is a baseball term, it’s when you send someone in to replace a weak batter. In cricket it would be a runner, like fatter or injured cricketers get sometimes. In Sinhala music videos they have old singers who you obviously don’t want to see romancing teenage girls, so they get a younger stand-in actor. I still think it’s a bit lame. Then there’s the love story. The classic cycle is 1) happy in love 2) tragic circumstances 3) sad forever. This one is no exception. I guess I gave it away, but it is raining during the whole video.
Dayasiri seems to be shot in Galle and the couple seems to be shot in Colombo. In reference to the ending, it just doesn’t happen like that. But you’ll have to watch and see.

I’m happy to be featured in Echelon magazine’s 40 Under 40 feature, profiling young people who contribute to the economy in some way, mainly in business but also in terms of innovation and thought leadership. It’s an interesting article not just in that I’m in it (mainly for work on indi.ca and

In an ideal world, those who govern and those who make the laws of the country would be spending their free time reading about political science, law, economics, the impact of technology on governance, history etc. and let others take care of entertainment. Well, that’s an ideal world.
I guess dayasiri has a lot of free time
