Malaka Silva, Our Next Education Minister?

Malaka Silva Dhiren

Malaka Silva’s main educational knowledge is not taking A/Levels and then dropping out of two foreign graphic design courses. He’s more commonly known for clubbing, violence, debauchery and possible drug dealing. He has assaulted average citizens, expats, police and now an Army Major, with impunity. When called to court he gets his dad to bail out or feigns ill to stay in hospital. Now he’s making even more news by saying that he wants to be Higher Education Minister. Wow.

Minister Mervyn Silva’s son Malaka has made a request to leave the country for higher education purposes, to fulfill his aspiration of one day becoming Sri Lanka’s Education Minister.

President’s Council Hemantha Warnakulasooriya appearing on behalf of Malaka Silva informed court that his client was expecting to enter an American University. (Daily Mirror)

The implication here seems to be that getting an education would make him eligible to be Higher Education Minister. He has previously said “If people plead and request me, then I will enter politics” (via Gossip Lanka). Which, uh, I don’t see that happening. What seems to be happening is that the people are pleading for him to be arrested and the people in the government protecting him (via his father) are requesting that he leave the country.

But goodness, the gall. The government is run like a mafia, but they mostly keep quiet. In fact, I wonder if this is all a smokescreen to cover up major dubiousness, the first family trotting out the first jester family as a distraction. Or maybe they’re just not in control. It was publicity hounds like John Gotti that made too much noise and ultimately upended the US mafia. Methinks the Silvas are making too much noise and making the corruption and injustice of the government appear all too clear.

“quite” – incorrect word :)

More like he is being sent abroad (politely kicked out of the country) so to avoid any further embarrassments to the government. It’s not like he can say it aloud, can he?

I remember that happening to Mahinda Wijesekaras’ and SBs’ sons during the past UNP regime (Ranil PM time) when those two started acting in a similar manner. According to my memory they went to Aussy to get their “education”.

If he tries to beat up an Army Major in the US he’ll certainly get an ‘education’. I’d say it would take him about 6 months to learn to walk again.

Yes, Kp how right you are.

After we were saved from 30 years of terrorism, too. Hang on, was it”saved” or “consumed”? I forget now.

i think he made that statement for the media. he knows media is after him. He like his father just want to be in media 365 days. Leaving the country is a decision by Gov. MR must have told Mervin to keep a low profile for his son.
As he is an idiot who can never have a proper education i doubt he will persue higher education there. But i wish he will get a taste of a good parippu in a club in US.

He’ll teach you good boy!, He’ll teach you good. A lesson you will never forget.

Yeah, I think the bugger will fit the role, don’t you?

There will be always be some people who will plead him to enter politics. Politicians always represent some part of the society. It’s just that in this case, that part of the society sucks.

As an American I can say that his behavior would not be tolerated in the US and the authorities don’t care who’s son he is. If he weren’t a politicians’ son he would have zero chance of getting a student visa, given his record. However, he is a politicians’ son. But the Embassy staff isn’t stupid; they know all about him. So I’d say the actual chances are, maybe, 50/50. I hope he stays out of the US. If he does go to the US, he had better mend his ways BEFORE he gets on the plane. Of course the odds of that happening… well, you know.

The next big problem is what portfolio should be allocated to Bandula and/or SB?

He will become the Minister of Education, if that is what he wants. There is always the 150,000 morons in Gampaha district to help him in that. We so deserve him.

Ben, I feel sorry for the US. My condolences to her citizens. Bit confused though. You say the US is impartial but since he is a politicians son they may be partial (give him a visa)? lol. US politics sounds very much like SL politics.

If the US gives him a visa they are not impartial are they? US politics = politics in SL.

Hi Such. The embassy here in Colombo might feel pressure, being here, and politics at all. But once in the States the local police department, etc. won’t give a hoot who he is the son of. I should have been clearer. Of course, if the guy is given diplomatic immunity of some sort, he can’t get be punished. But he WILL get tossed out of the country.

Oh the US embassy is Political alright, anyone who IS here is Political, i went to get my student visa for UCLA to do my masters and they tell me im not given a visa cos im not a genuine STUDENT!! WTF?? Sure i dont have a spotless continuous education where i went from grade one to Bachelors in one straight line, i have worked in between to support my family (hows that a crime?) so im not given the visa, with me goes some politicos son who came in a defender guard along with a gazillion vehicles and i had the pleasure of going into the visa office with him and having a friendly chat only to learn he had not even done anything past his Ordinary Levels and 10 minutes in he gets called in and gets served with a nice F1 (student) visa in under 2 minutes whilst after staying there for a good 2 hours i was sent home with a fist full of heart ache.

That’s really strange? UCLA is a pretty good school, surely the VISA officers are not silly enough to think UCLA would admit a student who’s not serious about his or her education.

I’m really sorry about what happened to you mate.

But it still seems a quite unusual, getting into UCLA and not being allowed to go.

Police Protection

Not to quote Ice Cube, but the Sri Lankan police are hardly beloved. A DIG was recently arrested for conspiring to murder a businessman, ie be a hit man. On the low levels reports of police torture and abuse are widespread. Low-ranking policemen are usually the ones disciplined, if at all, but this fish is really rotting from the head. The Sunday Times has a good piece on how the people at the top don’t get punished and how the structure of the government leads to corruption and abuse on the streets.

Internet Explorers

I just gave a talk at the University Of Sri Jayawardenapura along with Reeza Zarook of Anything.lk and Rohan Jayaweera of Google. These are my notes: Devin Jayasundara asked me for a subject for this talk and I told him Internet property. But I talked to my fiancé Shru and she had a better idea. Startups aren’t about creating property at all, not really. They’re about creating territory, about creating land.

The YAMU Android App

I haven’t been blogging much, I know. It’s partly because we’ve been doing a lot of work on YAMU, especially shipping 1.0.1 of the Android app today. It’s on the Google Play Store now. Inosh Perera did the programming (learning Android in the process) and Janith helped out with some design. My main contribution was a bunch of dead-end designs and like 6,000 lines of code we’re not using. The app isn’t perfect but it’s more perfect than it was 10 iterations ago. We think it’s pretty good.

Japanese People Drinking Beer On Sigiriya

I met an old-timer who said they used to drop acid and sleep atop Sigiriya, but the place has taken on a more commercial and quasi-spiritual role now. It was built by a king as a sort of retreat and used as a monastery. Now it’s a prime tourist and cultural destination. Hence it’s a bit odd to see a Japanese beer commercial shot up there. There’s a bunch of people eating, um, deep fried cream filled coconuts and then drinking some bracing beer. I hear the whole thing cost Rs. 25,000 (I’m presuming they used stock images).
