If we didn’t care much it was because we were dealing with terrorists, not Tamils. Tamils suffered because, in the time it took to make out the difference, many lives could be lost. Not nice times. Can we move on? Concentrate on raising the bar regardless of whom it affects?

They are related. As a country, we didn’t deal with HR, law and order issues during the latter part of war since they primarily impacted the Tamils. Others couldn’t care less. Sent the message to the govt that we will tolerate a lot of nonsense. Since then over the last 3+ years, the govt has been steadily lowering the bar on law and order and HR matters.

The army officer was apparently an undercover intelligence guy who had gone there on some assignment. Malaka had thought this guy was another thug whom he could beat up and get away with. It was much later that they realized this bugger was army intelligence. We don’t know what happened behind the scenes but i’d suspect both the father & son did a lot of apologizing.

This is disgusting, as usual. I am sure many Sri Lankan would think the same and agree.

Sadly, they will also agree that come next elections, there will more than a few who would be willing to peddle their services in support of these type of candidates – as foot soldiers, policy wonks and media handlers! This is the (sorry) state of Sri Lanka.

And of course anyone working against this in any effective way is being un patriotic.

Was no crime committed that the state wont press charges? Doesn’t the army HAVE to prosecute when the service weapon was taken? Was the officer technically off duty? Does that count?

I don’t think the issues are related quite as you think. The western world keeps talking about HR issues because Tamil diaspora and former LTTErs pressure them, India because Tamil Nadu does. That’s old school pressure politics, not out of any particular benevolence.

This is a breakdown of the rule of law which effects everyone, not the racial issues the international community keeps highlighting. If they went for the broader civil issues I think everyone would be better off. But they don’t.
