Gangam Style: Korean Wonder
This is the greatest music video, perhaps ever. Well, I dunno, I still like Take On Me. This video by South Korean rapper PSY is still pretty amazing. The title refers to Gangam, a posh section of Seoul, but beyond that it’s general madness. I especially like how they’re bringing figurative dance back. It’s hilarious and awesome, and also intentional. Great stuff.
They had a rough translation on Reddit. Apparently Oppa is like Ayya, so big brother is Gangam style. I’ve excerpted the parts I found most poetic.
A girl who is warm and humanle [sic] during the day
A classy girl who know how to enjoy the freedom of a cup of coffee
A girl whose heart gets hotter when night comes
A girl with that kind of twist…A girl who looks quiet but plays when she plays
A girl who puts her hair down when the right time comes
A girl who covers herself but is more sexy than a girl who bares it all
A sensable [sic] girl like thatI’m a guy
A guy who seems calm but plays when he plays
A guy who goes completely crazy when the right time comes
A guy who has bulging ideas rather than muscles
That kind of guy (AvenueWho)
What constantly amazes me is this type of creativity and fun can emerge from South Korea, whereas in North Korea only one person can live Gangam style at once, that being big brother, formerly Kim Jong-Il, now Kim Jong-Un. Everyone else has to deal with stuff like this, ‘Excellent Horse Like Lady’ rumoredly performed by Kim Jong-Un’s now wife:
But it’s not like North Koreans can’t be creative in their own way, check out this ensemble playing ‘Take On Me’ on accordians:
Anyways, that’s enough Korea I guess. I’m home kinda sick today, so, er, this is what I’m doing. Not Gangam style at all.
Not to quote Ice Cube, but the Sri Lankan police are hardly beloved. A
I just gave a talk at the University Of Sri Jayawardenapura along with Reeza Zarook of Anything.lk and Rohan Jayaweera of Google. These are my notes: Devin Jayasundara asked me for a subject for this talk and I told him Internet property. But I talked to my fiancé Shru and she had a better idea. Startups aren’t about creating property at all, not really. They’re about creating territory, about creating land.
I haven’t been blogging much, I know. It’s partly because we’ve been doing a lot of work on YAMU, especially shipping 1.0.1 of the Android app today. It’s on the
I met an old-timer who said they used to drop acid and sleep atop Sigiriya, but the place has taken on a more commercial and quasi-spiritual role now. It was built by a king as a sort of retreat and used as a monastery. Now it’s a prime tourist and cultural destination. Hence it’s a bit odd to see a Japanese beer commercial shot up there. There’s a bunch of people eating, um, deep fried cream filled coconuts and then drinking some bracing beer. I hear the whole thing cost Rs. 25,000 (I’m presuming they used stock images).

God this video is still fantastic. And the moves are so ridiculous and carefree. (Well I could do without that weird dude in the elevator with his disturbingly intense pelvic thrusts)
[...] not quite Gangnam Style, but this video by Sister Deborah (her friends call her Derby) is pretty amazing. This is a song [...]
