I ate a about a 100 when a friends’ father brought a huge bag (more like a sack.apparently they have too much in their garden and they do not sell it. It was the Malaysian type).ahhh…

Yesterday a friend told me that opening a rambutan by mouth is bad for your health as fungus, etc. in the peel goes to your mouth. You are expected to open a rambutan by hand which is difficult. Knife won’t be a good option either as you don’t find one on the road. I eat rambutans while traveling. I ate 30 in a raw while going to Anuradhapura from Colombo.

Sigh, I miss rambutan – I am never in Lanka when they are in season. There was this one glorious summer over here where they sold them at the local supermarket, it was all packaged up nice in packs of 4… and it was £1 per pack (probably cos it was ‘exotic fruit’). They were small and hideous and tasted just good enough for me to miss them more.
