Quite Possibly The Best Juice In Colombo (Bombay Sweet Mahal)

Fruit Cocktail At Bombay Sweet Mahal

I like juice. On a hot Colombo day (ie, every day) you can feel it pumping life back into your body. One of the best juices ever is the Rs. 290 fruit cocktail at Bombay Sweet Mahal, in Wellawatte. What is so especial about this juice? It’s all in the layers. The fruit cocktail is actually five different juices in one, and there are many entertaining ways to enjoy it. It’s pretty great.

Honestly, I don’t even know what the layers are. Mango at the bottom obviously then… beet root? Something red, which tastes good. Then avocado, papaya and I think soursop. What’s awesome about this juice is the interactive ways to drink it. You can:

  1. BOTTOMS UP – keep your straw at the bottom, progressively drinking through the layers, which remain almost completely separated
  2. ROVING STRAW – you can also move your straw around, trying different flavors at different times. Things get a bit more melange, but flavors still remain distinct
  3. MIX AND MATCH – you can mix the juices up, all or a few (for example, mix the top two, leaving the bottom relatively intact)
  4. MESSING MY JUICE UP – you can also be like my friend Savan, tilting the glass, moving the straw around aimlessly and thoughtlessly messing the whole thing up

If you’re looking for a consistent juice you can’t go wrong with the many Juiceez branches around Sri Lanka, but (IMHO) this interactive fruit cocktail is the single best juice around. For more on where and what Bombay Sweet Mahal is, check out YAMU.lk.

I’ll pass the colourblock juice. If that’s a square of soan papadi on the dish, pass it over.

There is this place in Colombo 3, on St. Micheal’s Road adjoining the Gunasiri Restaurant and just across the road of Uva Restaurant which serves thick and fresh fruit juices. You can choose from a variety of fruits to have them make your own drink. A big glass of juice only costs Rs.60.

Tony Soprano, RIP

The TV show the Sopranos taught me a lot about Sri Lankan politics. I was very sad to hear that the lead actor James Gandolfini passed away recently, in Rome. He created a deeply compelling and complex character in Tony Soprano, one which had you alternately rooting for and disgusted by him. Tony Soprano was like a big, angry, somewhat psychotic child, communicated mostly through the eyes, facial expressions, and extremely loud breathing. By all accounts Gandolfini was both a brilliant actor and a kind and interesting man.

Police Protection

Not to quote Ice Cube, but the Sri Lankan police are hardly beloved. A DIG was recently arrested for conspiring to murder a businessman, ie be a hit man. On the low levels reports of police torture and abuse are widespread. Low-ranking policemen are usually the ones disciplined, if at all, but this fish is really rotting from the head. The Sunday Times has a good piece on how the people at the top don’t get punished and how the structure of the government leads to corruption and abuse on the streets.

Internet Explorers

I just gave a talk at the University Of Sri Jayawardenapura along with Reeza Zarook of Anything.lk and Rohan Jayaweera of Google. These are my notes: Devin Jayasundara asked me for a subject for this talk and I told him Internet property. But I talked to my fiancé Shru and she had a better idea. Startups aren’t about creating property at all, not really. They’re about creating territory, about creating land.

The YAMU Android App

I haven’t been blogging much, I know. It’s partly because we’ve been doing a lot of work on YAMU, especially shipping 1.0.1 of the Android app today. It’s on the Google Play Store now. Inosh Perera did the programming (learning Android in the process) and Janith helped out with some design. My main contribution was a bunch of dead-end designs and like 6,000 lines of code we’re not using. The app isn’t perfect but it’s more perfect than it was 10 iterations ago. We think it’s pretty good.
