Is Offal Awful? Malay Restaurant, Dehiwela #yamu

We’re working out of Dehiwela so today Savan and I reviewed Malay Restaurant on Hill Street. This deeply gentrified hole in the wall has the usual biriyani and rice and curry, but also a range of Sri Lankan Malay specialities. These tend to be parts of meet (usually cow) that are… unusual. Fried brain, tongue and spleen curry are acquired tastes. I honestly don’t like them at all, but Savan does.

You can see our differing reviews in the (hacky and amateurish) video above. There’s more photos and details about the Malay Restaurant at yamu.lk. Which is not even in beta, btw.

I think the common way of spelling it is Dehiwala not Dehiwela – just saying in case you get less hits when people are searching.

Secondly, eating bovine brain is not the best thing to do. You can get prion diseases.

Prion disease is basically “mad cow disease” – it is extremely rare and unheard of in Sri Lanka (as far as I know – feel free to correct me if I am wrong). It can be transmitted by all types of ingested beef (not just brains).

There have been cases of bird flu in Sri Lanka – just wondering if you eat chicken?? ;-)

LOL, craishee video. :D What did you shoot it with?

One word – NO.

Ewww, yuk, gross and disgusting do not even touch the surface!

I do believe that Dehiwela is spelt correctly according to all the road signs in Colombo – perhaps tastyjujubes should complain to the RDA ;-) and wtf is prion disease? Must have a google.

I think “wela” is right.

Are you sure?

Because Dehiwala gets 1 270 000 hits on google while Dehiwela gets 261 000 hits including a “did you mean Dehiwala”

Wikipedia uses Dehiwala [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dehiwala-Mount_Lavinia ]

Dehiwala gets 1000+ hits on youtube while Dehiwela gets 156 hits.

So I think I’ll stand by my assertion that the common way of spelling it is Dehiwala and not Dehiwela.

Lol, I don’t think the hits prove the spelling right! Most Sinhalese place names with that sound come from the words “wela” — a field for planting, usually linked with a crop like Dehiwela (lime field) or Ambewela (mango field) — or “wella”– a beach, or riverbank, like Hanwella (hide bank) or Lewella (blood beach).

Dehiwala is the correct name as it is the direct translation of the Sinhala name

[...] is a video from the purchase and degustation of the fruit. As per our Malay Restaurant review (where Savan enjoyed the tripe and lung and spleen more than me), I am less enamored with durian [...]

I too decided to try their fare and ordered lamprais to my absolute shock was served white rice (told it was ghee rice) with pol sambol, bombay potatoe and seeni sambol along with some chicken and ash plantain wrappped in banana leaf under the guise and label of lamprais! Even when I pointed out that this could never be lamprais and to check a recipie book I was told I was the first to complain ever that this was how they always made lamprais!!! Dont be cheated DONT BUY THIS ITEM! I told them to pick up a parcel from green cabin, dutch burger unioin or fab and compare – to no avail or understanding I gave up trying to explain.

Monolithic Islam

Mohsin Hamid, author of How To Get Filthy Rich In Rising Asia, has a nice op-ed in the Guardian. Money quote for me was ‘Individuals are undeniably real. Groups, on the other hand, are assertions of opinion’. If you go buy news reports Muslims or Jews or Sri Lankans or any number of groups can appear monolithic and uniform. When you meet people, however, you find that they’re not. If you meet enough people you hopefully become aware of that tendency and judge people less by group identity in advance. Muslims, however, are quite publicly tarred with the same brush these days, and it really isn’t fair. Or accurate.

40 Under 40

I’m happy to be featured in Echelon magazine’s 40 Under 40 feature, profiling young people who contribute to the economy in some way, mainly in business but also in terms of innovation and thought leadership. It’s an interesting article not just in that I’m in it (mainly for work on indi.ca and Kottu but also YAMU) but also in that the magazine takes a bit of a critical stance. It’s worth reading the editorial (which I can only find in print) where they describe that only a few women are included and that all of the 40 are from middle to upper middle class backgrounds.

Chi Chi Hits The Scene, And A Referee

I won’t add too much commentary, but just read I guess. The youngest Rajapaksa, Rohitha (Chi Chi) has given an amazing interview to the Daily Mirror Life section, which is well worth a read. In other news, he also recently slapped a referee around in full public view at a rugby match. At least it seems that his elder brother restrained him.

Anti-Social Marketing (Nibras Bawa)

In 2009 this strange character appeared on the Sri Lankan Internet scene, getting angry, flaming, trolling whatever. Then he started naming anonymous bloggers, posting comments as people’s kids, nasty stuff, for which I removed him from Kottu. He also published some plagiarized stuff on Groundviews. He flamed out a bit more then disappeared. Until now. Now he’s back hosting a rather expensive social media event in Colombo, which is a bit ironic, seeing as he was known for being the most anti-social person the blogosphere had seen at the time.
