New New Kottu

Janith has updated Kottu with rims and shit. Seriously, it looks pretty good. You could say the desktop look is cosmetic, but check out the mobile. Kottu now looks like an app with settings and menus and such. The biggest problem with K2 is me, ie, it now takes me up to a month to respond to emails. OMG I’m scared of my email. But Janith’s done this code and design update all by himself and it looks pretty good. Check it out. There was one bug with the previous page link. Lettuce know if there’s any more.

It’s still got the old features (aggregating 1,119 blogs) plus the new stuff (calculating ‘hotness’ via social buzz, segmenting by language) with a new new look. It’s kottu.org. New… stuff everyday. I swear too much.

I remember the days when Sinhala was basically nonexistent and the blogosphere was dominated by a few folks with narrow minds – look at it now… It’s great.

Have to say the pink colour used on the dark grey background on the top is a bit of an eyesore. Everything else looks great.

Can we get separate RSS feeds based on the language?

Yeps, any combination of language/popularity that you use to view a page can be used to obtain a feed.

Let’s say you’re looking at Sinhala posts popular today: http://kottu.org/si/today
You can get the feed for that combination by putting a feed after the kottu.org bit: http://kottu.org/feed/si/today

It’s probably a better idea to make this more obvious in the interface, I guess. :D

Oh, tags. Um I thought nobody used that, hence the disappearance. :D But yeah, won’t be that hard to reintroduce them, if I ever figure out a sane URL scheme for it. :D

lol, trust me to be the only one :) maybe incorporate searching for labels in the search bar? unless it already works that way… or too complicated… in any case, its no biggie :)

That’s a good idea, incorporating it into search. I’ll work on that. :D

Actually, just got it to work on my phone. Just had to manually redirect it to the mobile site, cos it just kept going to the full site for some reason. It’s pretty nifty. Good job :)

Sorry about the redirect, it’s still not really working exactly as I intend it to. :(

Monolithic Islam

Mohsin Hamid, author of How To Get Filthy Rich In Rising Asia, has a nice op-ed in the Guardian. Money quote for me was ‘Individuals are undeniably real. Groups, on the other hand, are assertions of opinion’. If you go buy news reports Muslims or Jews or Sri Lankans or any number of groups can appear monolithic and uniform. When you meet people, however, you find that they’re not. If you meet enough people you hopefully become aware of that tendency and judge people less by group identity in advance. Muslims, however, are quite publicly tarred with the same brush these days, and it really isn’t fair. Or accurate.

40 Under 40

I’m happy to be featured in Echelon magazine’s 40 Under 40 feature, profiling young people who contribute to the economy in some way, mainly in business but also in terms of innovation and thought leadership. It’s an interesting article not just in that I’m in it (mainly for work on indi.ca and Kottu but also YAMU) but also in that the magazine takes a bit of a critical stance. It’s worth reading the editorial (which I can only find in print) where they describe that only a few women are included and that all of the 40 are from middle to upper middle class backgrounds.

Chi Chi Hits The Scene, And A Referee

I won’t add too much commentary, but just read I guess. The youngest Rajapaksa, Rohitha (Chi Chi) has given an amazing interview to the Daily Mirror Life section, which is well worth a read. In other news, he also recently slapped a referee around in full public view at a rugby match. At least it seems that his elder brother restrained him.

Anti-Social Marketing (Nibras Bawa)

In 2009 this strange character appeared on the Sri Lankan Internet scene, getting angry, flaming, trolling whatever. Then he started naming anonymous bloggers, posting comments as people’s kids, nasty stuff, for which I removed him from Kottu. He also published some plagiarized stuff on Groundviews. He flamed out a bit more then disappeared. Until now. Now he’s back hosting a rather expensive social media event in Colombo, which is a bit ironic, seeing as he was known for being the most anti-social person the blogosphere had seen at the time.
