Ebert Silva Passes Away

End of an era, man. You may recognize Ebert Silva from the back of buses all over the country. I think his was the one with the Thundercats lion logo. The buses are so ubiquitous that I even used Ebert Silva’s name as a character in a (very) short story. Apparently he also did a lot of tourism work, including the Colombo City Tours. It’s quite sad to hear that he’s passed away.
The classic move in Sri Lanka is to name your bus or trishaw after your kid. This has the side affect of people cursing your children in traffic, but on the whole it’s quite sweet. I was reading Mr. Silva’s obit and apparently his father started the company, naming it after his child. That child grew up to take over and expand the business and just died last Wednesday. I know him from the streets. May he rest in peace.
