Doggy Sterilization Camp
A lot of people are buzzing on FB about the move to cull stray dogs. Might as well use some of that energy towards action. Adopt A Dog Sri Lanka is doing (another) sterilization camp in Katharagama, and they need donations. If there are friendly dogs in your hood you can also take them somewhere (I go to PetVet, dunno) and get them fixed and immunized.
Whatever you feel about the culling of the stray dog population (I think it should happen, as part of a broader policy) I think everyone agrees that these stray dogs need help. If everybody took care of the animals in their neighborhood the government wouldn’t have to step in. Barring that, since this issue is getting play on Facebook, it might as well pay those who are working to make a difference. One sterilization costs Rs. 1,500 – 2,000, plus the dogs get a yogurt treat. I contacted Oshadie on Facebook to make a donation, I think the donations are going through Andrew Jebaraj, who is known to me.
Their last sterilization camp was successful and well documented, if you are concerned about the stray dog issue, the easiest thing you can do is wire then like 2k and make an actual difference right now. Right now they’re only like 5k short of their goal, but I’m assuming they can always sterilize more dogs.
So basically, whatever you feel about the culling issue, if you feel something, either adopt a dog (here’s a selection), sterilize and treat a dog you know, or help some people that do both (ie, Adopt A Dog SL, or Embark, or PetVet). Then update your Facebook status.

This is highly dubious. Miss Travel is a travel/social networking site that connects ‘Generous’ and ‘Attractive’ travelers. To, like, travel together, I guess. It all seems a bit like arranged prostitution and trafficking. This is part of a broader online trend to connect rich men to younger, attractive women. Sites like
Sri Lankan domestics never say anything, they just stop coming. My maid just stopped coming and when I finally pressed her she said I needed to get a washing machine. I was hoping to ride this one out, but I’ve run out of underwear and I have no choice. I finally caved and bought a washing machine, from

You couldn’t have picked a better picture for this story. Expression on that dog’s face is priceless – poor thing.
These guys have done a great job in Kataragama. Made my heart swell with appreciation when I saw the efforts they have put in and how people have come forward and joined hands together to do a great job. Everyone has done such a professional, humane and a transparent job as a 38 year old Sri Lankan makes me proud about the younger generation and gives hope and encouragement about my kids. I’ll make sure that I contribute the next time it’s happening. However, I agree with you that if we cannot do this on a large scale, then we should continue the culling put these poor animals out of their misery and also ensuring safety to the human population. I read Jack Point’s post on this and completely agree with his views and experiences.
