Crazy Maldivians Attacking False Idols

The Maldives is hosting SAARC this year, where leaders from across South Asia gather. As gifts, some countries have brought monuments. Crazy protestors, however, have started toppling and burning these monuments as ‘false idols’. This is actually backed by political parties, including one founded by the former PM/dictator Gayoom.
Adhaalath Party [not Gayoom's] President Sheikh Imran Abdulla this week told Minivan News that the monument “should not be kept on Maldivian soil for a single day” and “should be removed immediately.”
“We believe it conflicts with the constitution of the Maldives, the Religious Unity Act of 1994 and the regulations under the Act,” he said, because it depicted “objects of worship” that “denied the oneness of God. (Vandalism of Pakistani monument damaging to Maldives’ image: Foreign Ministry)

I say Crazy Maldivians as a subset of Maldivians, not that Maldivians are all crazy. Maldivians are great. Thanks for the fish. This is just crazy. No one is going to worship a stack of books from Pakistan or a Sri Lankan lion. Please consider it a national paperweight. Just to keep your topsoil down.
They’re saying that it’s against Islam, but Pakistan is an Islamic country, and I think they, you know, build stuff in Islamic countries as well.
I’m inclined to think this is just a malicious attempt to embarrass the Maldivian government by insulting its guests, but it also makes the Maldives look bad (though we of course know better). The Maldives is a Muslim country, but far from fundamentalist. Everyone I know is quite chill. This is just odd.
