Not Cricket

OMG by Dhammika Heenpella / Images of Sri Lanka

I usually start by saying that I’m not a fan of cricket, but that’s not true anymore. I am a fan of cricket. Not a knowledgeable one or an avid one, but I really enjoy the game. I honestly think that Twenty20 Cricket is the first truly new sport of the century and incredibly awesome for anyone to watch. Cricket is the only game I know which can scale from 5 days down to three hours and be enjoyable in different ways. I’m also proud that Sri Lanka is respected and awesome at this sport, which is why I’m also really sad to see it getting politicized.

Something went really wrong in the World Cup. Sri Lanka basically lost because we put in a sub-standard team and afterwards the captain, vice-captain and selection committee all stepped down. Something was seriously wrong in the management. And something still is. As far as I’m concerned, the less I hear about the cricket board, the better. Their job is to help the players play. That’s it. Instead, they’ve been acting like they own the place.

Take the IPL fiasco. Players from all over the world go to India to play in the Indian Premier League. It’s short (like two months?), awesome fun and the players can actually make a living without selling pens or engine oil. It’s honestly good for everybody. Almost every year, however, the Sri Lankan cricket board signs everything releasing the players and then tries to call them back at the last minute.

This time they’ve tried to bring all the players back for a test match with England. This would have the effect of A) stripping a lot of teams B) removing two team captains C) depriving players of income and D) looking like international dicks. Thankfully the Cricket Board has failed in all objectives except D (for douchebaggery).

They’re also directly messing with Lasith Malinga to the point that he’s quit test cricket altogether. He’s injured and they had the audacity to ask why he plays T20 instead of test cricket. Well, maybe because he’d bowl as much in one test match as he would in one season of IPL (Island Cricket). Also, these are not indentured servants and their knees are their own. Also, he’s fucking awesome! Who does the cricket board think they are?

It’s like why? Throughout the war, throughout all the bullshit, cricket was one thing that Sri Lanka could enjoy. I know that it was political, but the politics didn’t spill out so uglily. Since Sangakarra and Mahela declined the captaincy, Dilshan Tillekeratne took it. Sanga and especially Mahela I respect greatly, while Dilshan is a great player. But the board is using him like a scab. Dilshan is saying that he’ll come back early to support the nation while Mahela, Sanga and Murali are like WTF? It’s just splitting the team, making us look like international dummies and, quite honestly, I think this mismanagement cost us the cup.

I like Sri Lankan politics as one sort of sport and cricket as another. Like Shehan says in Chinaman, “unlike life, sport matters”. Now, however, politics and cricket are starting to mix and it’s really unpleasant to watch. It’s just not cricket.

“My doctors in Australia had said that mine was a rare type of injury and that I would not be able to play again. But thanks to president Mahinda Rajapaksa’s private physician Dr Eliyantha White who treated me, I was able to play for the national team again.”

That was hilarious! BTW a completely agree with malinga’s decision. SLC is a horribly incompetent organization run by morons. much like the rest of world cricket.

Finally more people who see the value of T20.

The whole thing happened if I remember right was because of Jayasuriya entering politics and involving the sports minister to be able to play for a match. Cricket was politicized way before but the situation worsened after Jayasuriya’s greediness me thinks.

You are right indi. You know Jack-shit about cricket!! Ha…ha…ha…Lasith Malinga fucking awesome??? Dilshan is a great player???
Malinga is just another idiot islander who was lucky enough to get 4 consecutive wickets in a WC and has a funny hair style. Dilshan is a fielder. (full stop) He thinks he can bat…but he is just a flat pitch bully like Sir Nut JEW Sorrya. They both score their runs in the 1st 15 overs. Very rarely do they last beyond 15 overs. They learnt their batting at the “Come or Go Chicago” school of batting.

Bean. Seriously. Just because you have a small penis, you don’t have to hate everything.
.
16 wickets.

Duncie, but didn’t you say malinga was a champion right before the world cup final. What did he do between then & now to deserve your wrath. Or is this just a case of you contradicting yourself

2011-04-27 15:50:45

um, if you score your runs in the first 15 overs, isn’t that just about right for T20? Not that it’s even true, I like both players

Indi…Dilshan is a good fielder…but it’s just a joke to call him a great player! Warne, Murali, Lara, Tendulkar, Bradman etc were great players. Shehan says in Chinaman, “unlike life, sport matters”. But sadly in Silly Lunket today, the only thing that matters is the “Family Dictatorship.” See how they have infiltrated every aspect of our lives…including our rugby. As long as the “Family Dictatorship” rules and the people are in Rip Wan Winkle mode, their is no hope for this country let alone any kind of sport…including cricket. Just watch the drubbing we will get at the hands of the England team in next months test matches…the one dayers are another kettle of fish which I cant comment on right now.

ps. I think Dilshan will score below 200 runs in all three tests.

(Comments wont nest below this level)

About the ’96 World Cup: “Sri Lanka’s game style over the course of the series revolutionized One Day International Cricket, and was characterized by highly aggressive batting in the first fifteen overs of the innings in order to take advantage of the fielding restrictions imposed during this period. This strategy has since become a hallmark of One Day International cricket.”

So yeah, openers are meant to fire during the first 15 overs. I don’t care if they last, as long as they get those crucial runs.

I personally feel that he chucks from time to time. But the ICC has cleared him and chuck or no chuck he still has over 800 wickets.

Why Does India Suck At The Olympics?

Today on the morning show we talked about the Olympics, namely China’s emerging dominance. For me the bigger question is India. Why does India suck so much? In 2008 the US won 110 medals, China won 100 and India won… 3. India has over a billion people, some economic clout and is by all counts an emerging superpower, but they suck at the Olympics. Why?

New New Kottu

Janith has updated Kottu with rims and shit. Seriously, it looks pretty good. You could say the desktop look is cosmetic, but check out the mobile. Kottu now looks like an app with settings and menus and such. The biggest problem with K2 is me, ie, it now takes me up to a month to respond to emails. OMG I’m scared of my email. But Janith’s done this code and design update all by himself and it looks pretty good. Check it out. There was one bug with the previous page link. Lettuce know if there’s any more.

Miss Travel. Alternately, Mistravel

This is highly dubious. Miss Travel is a travel/social networking site that connects ‘Generous’ and ‘Attractive’ travelers. To, like, travel together, I guess. It all seems a bit like arranged prostitution and trafficking. This is part of a broader online trend to connect rich men to younger, attractive women. Sites like seekingarrangement.com connects women to ‘sugar daddies’ already. I guess Miss Travel is just taking that trend international. Wait, I checked, it’s the same guy doing both.

Buying Appliances Online (Singer)

Sri Lankan domestics never say anything, they just stop coming. My maid just stopped coming and when I finally pressed her she said I needed to get a washing machine. I was hoping to ride this one out, but I’ve run out of underwear and I have no choice. I finally caved and bought a washing machine, from Singer, ONLINE. I put the online in all caps because it’s pretty awesome. I ordered the thing in like 15 minutes on Saturday and they just delivered it today. It’s pretty awesome, this brave new world.
