Two Kfirs Crash
Two Sri Lankan fighter jets have crashed. They were not defecting to Gampaha. It seems like things just got messed up and they had to bail, sadly, one pilot has died. They apparently crashed while practicing a fly-by for the 60th anniversary of the Air Force. Wikipedia says that the SLAF had 12 Kfirs as of 2009, meaning that we just lost a significant percentage of our fleet. Previously, two Kfirs were lost in the LTTE’s attack on the airport. Each one costs about $4.5 million USD, which is no small sum for a small country. Thankfully, we don’t need to bomb our own country that much anymore.
The Kfir is an interesting plane, an Israeli copy of the French Dassault Mirage, produced at a time when there was an arms embargo against Israel. They managed to recreate the plane through extensive espionage. Above is a video from a French movie about the Mirage 2000, a $23 million dollar update of the same. It shows how beautiful two planes intertwined in flight can be, unless they crash.

I was hoping to ride this one out, but I’ve run out of underwear and I have no choice. I finally caved and bought a washing machine, from
Wonder whether we’ve even finished paying for them yet.
That’s just sad… I was really looking forward to the 60th anniversary celebrations (fighter jet geek). :(

I wonder if there’s such thing as insurance for warplanes? It’s a 1000 million loss or something :S
Insurance of war equipment is not possible. The defence ministry does not even bother to insure ordinary vehicles (jeeps, cars) that travel on the roads, which is quite unusual I think.
