The Angles Of Town Hall

The spires

I was hanging around ODEL junction, waiting for the protesters to come. The cops rolled out the barricades and stood in ambling protest against the protest. Or something. The police piled into buses and headed towards Kelaniya with the water cannons. I don’t think any students ever came. One never stands in the middle of the street cause you’re not supposed to, but sometimes you see things differently if you stop. Of if the cops stop everything for you. From that point, for example, you could see the white domes of Colombo 7′s mosque, Town Hall and clock tower line up just perfectly.

Impressive cop

And this moustache.

I LOVE that cop man. He’s either part of Cinnamon Gardens, or Fort. He’s someone all of us keep an eye out for, when we’re shooting.

When you’re shooting cops? I thought that was the exclusive premise of arrested underworld members.

I like the handle bars, Hells angels fall off may be! But I noticed that designers, builders never thought of cleaning or conducting repairs in a hurry when they built the clock tower! :)

Great shot, great composition: spires. That lamppost is the only annoyance there.

Indi, what’s your experience of doing such “street photography” in Colombo? I can’t count the number of times I’ve passed a great opportunity for a photo, but have been nervous to stop and start photographing. I don’t even refer to clearly “asking-for-trouble” shots such as your photo of the cop! nor do I refer to any “risky” areas e.g., (harbor, Courts, army/navy places). No, i mean even simple shots that don’t involve any people and that aren’t in any risky areas. My hesitation is mainly the fact of how people in general, as well as any police/armed forces would likely tend to view any such photography with suspicion. (And i don’t even have any press credentials).

Great pictures. I hate that ugly clock tower and heartily wish someone would pull all of the silly Premadasa era clock towers down but the picture is very interesting.

Photos: Random Yards And Gardens

These are photos of random peoples gardens. Above is from a house which has what appears to be a full sized evergreen in the yard. They have not decorated it for Christmas, but perhaps they should. My friend in Borella has a random bullock cart in their yard, pictured below. Also featured are a rooftop garden overlooking town hall, an austere pool/lawn combo, and two long exposures - one of a pretty girl in Maharagama

The Crappy Side Of Travel

I am hot, miserable and constipated. I sleep poorly, most recently in a urban shelving unit with a glass brick view of the hall. I end up lost for minutes if not hours on end, going in circles and getting contradictory directions, missing sunsets and appointments. I book trains late and have to take the bus. I miss the bus.

Daily Mirror Breaking News

The Daily Mirror Online is the gold standard for online news in Sri Lanka or, more accurately, the bronze standard in an age where everyone else is using sticks and voodoo. The Daily Mirror Online, however, is not actually good. Today, for example, they ran 'Addicts behind slayings', referring to the spate of beggar killings in Colombo. This conclusion, however, is sourced to exactly one beggar outside Town Hall, thus hardly a conclusion. In another
