Mervyn Silva, Deputy Media Minister

Mervyn after Rupavahini staff assaulted him. They were later fired or stabbed in the bus

In a sort of 1984 Ministry Of Love kinda way, Mervyn Silva is the Deputy Minister of Media. Previous qualifications include smashing Sirasa TV cameras and physically assaulting the head of Rupavahini TV. So now when the media has complaints they can address them directly to the usual source. At this point, for me, it is just funny, but I wonder how you say FML for a country. FMC?

The Gods must be crazy, but at least they have a sense of humor.

You neglected to mention that the President, I believe, is still the media Minister. While I can’t comment on what effect the Media Minister will have on the media, it’s a brilliant move on his part to keep the class clown in check.

Putting him in jail might be a bit more of an intelligent thing to do.

Correct me if I am wrong, voters too have an excellent sense of humour. Didn’t he get near the top in preferential votes?

I didn’t find the movie “Idiocracy” to be funny. Now I know why.

I can’t figure out why everyone is ACTING LIKE THE WORLD IS GOING TO END.

For those too short sighted to realize:

Deputy ministers have little or no power to make decisions, and are answerable to the media minister. They are also responsible for what happens to the constituents of their ministry.

Mervyn is responsible not only for what happens to the media, he is also answerable to the president himself. Whereas the previous spineless media minister was afraid of Mervyn, I don’t think even Merv is stupid enough to act like he has more power than the president.

Get that through your thick skulls.

deputy ministers as a concept is bullshit. An absolute waste of public funds

@Dilan – Did it ever occur to you that he’s been made deputy minister not to be kept in check but to keep the media in check for the President? He might not have any power to make decisions but he now has the legitimate backing to enforce the decisions of the President, which may or may not be in favour of media freedom.

Yes it occurred to me, and I think the president you seem to underestimate so much is not as cynical or stupid as you are. Read your own comment and think about what you’re saying for a minute.
