Sita Sings The Blues (Tonight)

Sita Sings The Blues is one of the best movies I’ve seen this year. It’s screening tonight at Barefoot (7:30), free. It’s a cartoon retelling of the Ramayana from Sita’s perspective (loosely). Moreso, it’s a personal experience of the Ramayana by a talented cartoonist (Nina Paley), using it to understand India, her own failed relationship and life and people in general. More to the point, the songs and humor are amazing and, at times, deeply moving. I highly recommended.
The movie itself is released under a liberal Creative Commons license, so anyone can download or remix or show or do whatever with it. So if you want to you can download it online.

You have crush on Sita, don’t you? Jesus man. I’ve had crushes on totally unattainable women. But none of them were 3000 years older than me.
They screened this at my uni last year. I thought Sita sings the blues was typical embittered feminist stuff. Sita is oh so perfect while every male character is deeply flawed and total dickbags. The subtlety of the Ramayana is lost. Poor movie in my opinion.
Ram IS a dick, in a way.
Rama is definitely flawed. He burnt alive the woman who loved him.
