Rameshwaram, First Impressions

Rameshwaram is about 30k from Sri Lanka. It looks like home, but it’s a bit weird. For one thing, it feels about 30k from the sun. Oh my God it was hot. And it was impossible to get a room. As a single man they all said no. They saw me hot and dying in the street like a pack mule and said no. I called and reserved and when I arrived they said no. And a Sri Lankan passport here elicits no grins at all. They say single men are terrorists or some here to kill themselves, but if I was going to commit suicide I’d check in to a nicer hotel.
I like being close to home, but this is basically the most unwelcoming place I’ve been to in India. I was so happy to see the sea, but people are so unhappy to see me. I don’t get it.
I have found a place to rest my weary bones, half a click from the temple. I’m going to go look for home in the morning. I’m starting to miss it terribly.

This is highly dubious. Miss Travel is a travel/social networking site that connects ‘Generous’ and ‘Attractive’ travelers. To, like, travel together, I guess. It all seems a bit like arranged prostitution and trafficking. This is part of a broader online trend to connect rich men to younger, attractive women. Sites like
Sri Lankan domestics never say anything, they just stop coming. My maid just stopped coming and when I finally pressed her she said I needed to get a washing machine. I was hoping to ride this one out, but I’ve run out of underwear and I have no choice. I finally caved and bought a washing machine, from

Do not hate Rameshwaram, it is us who made them behave this way. As with everything, time will heal.
