Has The UNP Abandoned Fonseka?

Fonseka at the Cinnamon Lakeside

Perambara has an interesting story on Has the UNP abandoned Fonseka? I daresay, yeah. It was always a tenuous relationship with little coordination. I think most of the manifesto and many documents were UNP, but Fonseka would always keep changing stuff. There weren’t any significant Fonseka representatives hanging around UNP offices. Those there seemed to have plenty of free time, so they probably weren’t that connected.

The JVP and Fonseka were much closer. In terms of body language, I saw the lot at a press conference while Fonseka was under siege in the Cinnamon Lakeside. He was much more jocular with Somawansa and Ranil didn’t show up till late. Then Karu had to move from his seat to let Ranil in, it was funny.

Now the body language is much colder. In the UNP’s manifesto there is literally one point related to Fonseka, whereas Fonseka’s image and ill-treatment are the core of the JVP (Democratic National Alliance) campaign.

Fonseka was a loose cannon and I really think many in the UNP are glad to see him gone, including Ranil. That said, Fonseka was really one of the last people in the country crazy enough to take real shots at Mahinda. Despite being a political neophyte, he was still a more inspiring leader than Ranil and redoubtably brave. Ranil is just calculating and waiting for his inheritance, which will probably never come. Fonseka was crazy enough to go out there guns a blazing and actually do some damage. Before ending up in jail.

It is still pretty shit that the UNP seems to have abandoned Fonseka. He probably would’ve abandoned them if he’d gotten into power, but he at least at the courage to run, basically on their behalf. Being in jail sucks and the UNP is still a big party that supposedly supported him. Except now they kinda don’t.

Of course they have. His use is waning everyday. (Political neophyte inspiring leader) ?. Perhaps UNP knew all along what was coming. What Fonseka did not realize was that these politicians have parties together, once the campaigning is over.
Today I took my dog for a walk. He was very confirming and heeded to my every command, while he was on leash. But once I let him off at the park, he became a mad dog, scaring other dogs (he is a big dog) and people, chasing birds which he could not ever catch. He was barking at the sea and trees forcing old ladies cover their ears with hands and in turn letting loose their tiny chihuahuas making a huge riot. Even though it was a big commotion, I let him roam and frolic for a while and of course put him back on the leash, to go back home.
While waking back, I wondered, was that the last election!? Cannot be! He is the best dog in the WWW. ;)

Poor Fonseka, not only the UNP but even his unofficial campaign manager Mangala has abandoned him. Fonseka gambled with all his money and lost everything. It is true that Fonseka was a loose cannon, but I think the real issue is not about Fonseka, but about the structure of the UNP.
Now this man,Ranil, has been in the leadership for ages and if he has some dignity left he should resign and let Karu be appointed as an interim leader until they find a suitable leader. But the UNP is so undemocratic. This party only caters to a particular crowd in sri lanka.Instead,it should try to include all.

  • Shammi: It's funny the way most of the stories and rituals in the bible have so much in common with legends of more ancient pagan civilizations. Bits of the tales of Gilgamesh, Dionysus et al are mirrored in the descriptioons of Noah, Moses, Jesus, the Holy Trinity and the holy family etc., even a trace of Solomon reflected in Mahoshada of the jataka tales. The Coup: Smelt It, Dealt It

I thought Mahinda naming state companies after himself (Mihin) was a whim, but it may be his will. More and more Sri Lanka is the state, and the state is him. Or them I guess. The opposition candidate is in jail and his son is running for office. Elections are becoming a formality for fealty, opposition a coup. Such are the spoils of war. Something smells a bit off.

Fonseka Arrested, Law Molested

The only law is 'don't oppose Mahinda'. General Sarath Fonseka is being arrested for "revealing military secrets and also plotting the assassination of President Mahinda Rajapaksa." It's a bit preposterous that he was plotting a coup with his government security and hypothetical Army deserters. 'Revealing military secrets' would imply that his allegations were true, which is another kettle of fish.

Cluedo In The Lagoon

Beyond the 'who said it' drama is a 'whodunnit'. What Sarath said was that Gotabaya ordered surrendering LTTErs killed. The government is spinning this politically as if Fonseka is a traitor. They are all discussing what was said, but not what happened. There were a bunch of dead people in the lagoon. The real murder mystery is who ordered the hit, and who's trying to pin what on whom.

Fonseka Can Legally Be President

You don't have to be registered to vote or vote in order to be elected President. You just have to be a citizen and nominated properly. It is, of course, a huge PR kerfuffle, but the big legal issue may actually be Rupavahini running false and malicious information that he was disqualified. He's not, he just looks bad. If that case gets filed it may, oddly involve a precedent involving Basil Rajapakse. Fonseka is a

This Race Is Close

I heard that there were posters around town citing polling data, saying that Mahinda would get well over 50%. I don't know, but I think the race is much closer than that. Even in the mood around Colombo, a lot of people are breaking towards General Fonseka. Colombo is all sound and fury, but with the Tamil National Alliance supporting the man, he will get a significant march-to-the-polls Tamil vote. The CWC (Indian Tamil vote
