So you think it's realistic to compare a specific group of Sri Lankans to the entire US. Lol.

It's impossible to gauge from just looking at pictures of popstars or treehuggers. Exactly my point. Britney in that pic would appear overweight only to some anorexic gossip columnist. On the other hand the survey would have relied on some scientific method of measuring this. But your way is much more fun of course.
Government school?

And yet it still remains that people in Colombo are 5 times more overweight than the average American.

A peer-reviewed fact.

You must have missed the caption, my government school friend: it's a picture of an overweight Britney Spears. You can always tell when a person is obese, but it's not the case with someone who's overweight. So being overweight is not necessarily a serious thing: it could be a few pounds overweight, it could be many pounds overweight, it could be easy to spot, or it could be impossible to tell from just looking .

Very scientific measurement that, Britney Spears' mood swings and weight fluctuations! I'm sure the people who did these surveys relied on some dull old standard like BMI to determine who was overweight or not. But do go on, you open up some interesting vistas.

In the USA case, they must have a very rigid definition of overweight, for 65% to hold. You wouldn't be able to tell by looking that the person is overweight, unless the person is obese (which is an extreme case). Here's a very good example:

http://poponthepop.com/gallery/britney-spears-pale-and-overweight/

But by this logic (aka standard), the number of overweight people in SL should be way higher.

65% is not accurate. It would mean every 65 out of 100 white people is overweight. Simple random picture:

http://www.treehugger.com/20090318-crowd-new-york-city.jpg

Look at your other statistic - 20%. Every 20 out of 100 persons in SL is overweight - now that is more believable.

Quoting from Dodo's stats

percentage of overweight white 65%
percentage of overweight people in SL 20%

Still quite a large gap to bridge., no?

Because to say 29% are obese is misleading. For the entire USA, the number is closer to 25%. The extra 4% comes from 5 or 6 states within a specific region. The same thing goes with SL. If you took away the North, the obesity rate for SL would simply soar.

Keep at it, prof. Why don't you suggest we compare the Orthodox Jews of Manhattan to SL, or the Mormon lesbians or the black KKK members? I mean, try ANYthing to distract from the fact that Americans have a high percentage of obesity than Sri Lankans. There has to be a way, lol. There is nothing meaningful in any of it, but Jesus, who gives a fuck right, as long as you don't have to fall silent and admit defeat on this blog too?

When you say " from just the north" you're being selective, arent you? How can you call that a random sample? I cant be bothered looking at the data, and I dont even know how these things are usually done, but common tellsme that in order to get a general rate of 27%, other areas would have to compensate with even higher rates, right?
What's wrong with looking at the general picture anyway?

Not really. If you did took a random sample of 21 million people in the USA from just the north, the obesity rate would not be 29%, contrary to the claims of Dodo.

You can see this in the state-by-state data here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obesity_in_the_United_States. Most northern states don't even have an obesity rate of 27%.

But the entire population of Sri Lanka is very close to 21 million.

That's what I meant by "equal sample size" - its implied that you'll be doing a regional comparison.

Since you're unwilling to take up the challenge:

Study setting: Colombo district is the commercial capital of Sri Lanka which presents a mixed
picture of an area experiencing rapid and deep-seated demographic and social changes.
Study population: A sample of 1400 males and females of the age range of (20-64) years was
selected. Being a resident of Colombo for a continued period of not less than one year ensured
his/ her lifestyle to be well established related to their residence in the area. Those with
pathological or iatrogenic conditions of obesity were excluded.

Results and Discussion: Response rate of the study sample was 96.3%. It had a higher proportion
of males and a median age of 38.9 years. The majority consisted of Sinhala-Buddhists (84%)
resident in urban areas (55%). Overall prevalence of abdominal obesity was 34.9 per 100 persons
(95% CI=32.5-37.4). Corresponding rates of overweight and generalized obesity were 49 % (95%
CI=46.4-51.6) and 32.2 % (95% CI=29.8-34.7), respectively. Of the total, 32% had both types of
obesity while 48% subjects had neither.

http://iussp2005.princeton.edu/download.aspx?submissionId=51592

----------------------------
So we if go by the data you provided earlier (29% of all white Americans are obese), the average person in Colombo is 5 times more likely to be obese than the average white American .

Now where did that goalpost go...? : )

If you're looking at the average taken from the entire population, then the disparity in sample size doesn't matter. But once you start breaking it down region by region, then there may be broad disparities from the mean. The study does not claim that 29% of whites in every state are obese.

The problem is that you're looking at both the North and the South simultaneously. Obesity is much higher in the South than the North. Similarly, I'm willing to bet obesity is much higher in the South of SL than the North. Why don't you try comparing the obesity rates for Southern SL to the Southern USA? And Northern SL to Northern USA. Then you'll have a more meaningful comparison.

Obviously lifestyle and diet must be the main factors contributing to obesity anywhere, but they're not the only ones, that's what I meant.
Genes define the basic body shape, height must be a result of a combination of genes, nutrition and lifestyle.

Heshan, the american study is saying if you were to take 21mn white americans at random the result would be the same. that's how statistics work.

and yes both studies looked at adults.
