Why All The Guns?

Depostering, photo by Perambara

I don’t think it’s normal to surround the opposition candidate with troops as a result is being called? Nor is it normal to surround the media outlets with guns. And the Daily Mirror website just went down, hopefully just for a second. I don’t think the Fonseka camped is very armed, certainly not compared to the Army. I also don’t think they’re staging a coup from the Cinnamon Lakeside. This is all just very odd, and a bit inappropriate. Illegal cutouts and misuse of state media is one thing, but physically surrounding the opposition with military is a bit out of line. The thing about Army deserters is also a bit of a lame excuse. Why are they so insecure?

This election wasn’t fair, but I thought the count was legitimate. I don’t get why the opposition and media are surrounded by troops.

Quote my Mother “If the election went the other way around, Gota and the rest would be in prison right now”

I agree with Dee. Fonseka is a dangerous man, a psychopath similar to Indi Amin – he just hasn’t had his time to “shine” yet as an all powerful executive president. Why does Fonseka have army deserters with him in the first place? Now THAT is suspicious.

Just curious, if the deserters aren’t aligned with SF ( as per Brdg Udaya N’kara )- why would 400 guys come and stay at an expensive hotel ?

Exactly. I wonder how Fonseka is feeling right now… I bet he’s shivering in fear, feeling small and regretting his move to go against the president.

Well, in a democratic country – SF has all rights to participate as a candidate.

In a true democracy, any one of us, as citizens, have the right to run…just as much as we have the right to an opinion – unless of course one thinks along the line that anyone with a different opinion is a terrorist.

I completely agree with Dee and V – what the heck is Fonseka doing even in the same place as army deserters? Are they the only army support he could get? If so, that is illegal and so hypocritical. It was inevitable that when MR won, the Colombo circles would start buzzing that it was rigged – the people have spoken and want Rajapakse – we just need to live with it and work hard to make something of our country, irrelevant of who sits on the throne.

If Fonseka won, the Rajapakse’s would have been marched to jail and all other ministers would have been put under house arrest. Though now we’ll never know.

DailyMirror cannot handle large number of requests at a time, it seems as if goes down…. but just try a couple of times and you should get through. I learnt this when bombs were going off all over the country… DM should be down as soon as it happens cause of the number of hits!

Why would army deserters all gather in one place with a 50/50 chance that SF will lose and they will get arrested? Whatever your political affiliations, this has become a question of democracy in Sri Lanka – whether we want it to continue or lose it forever. The election commissioner has never been held under house arrest during a major election before (and this is a country which has elections every two breaths). The opposition candidate has never been treated in such a manner before. At the end of the day, we have to value human life and democracy. Regardless of political views. Else, it says too much of our own values.

Call upon your President to call back the troops and let General Fonseka and his family leave in peace. Afterwards, arrest whomsoever they deem as army deserters. Simple.
