What Is Going On

Taking down poster, photo by Perambara

The saddest thing about the wartime crippling of the media is that now we have no idea what’s going on. The co-option of the state media into propaganda wings is also befuddling. What remains is an atmosphere of low trust and low information, a vacuum filled with rumor or innuendo. I hear the weirdest shit, still. It never occurred to me, but one meme now is that the election is rigged and the Elections Commissioner is surrounded somewhere. I don’t believe that, but I also have no way of actually knowing what’s going on. I get phone calls of stuff people overhear from high-placed sources but no documents, few names and fewer shreds of rationality. Personally, I think Mahinda just won, beating all predictions. I also don’t really know.

It is a bit dodgy that the opposition candidate is surrounded by military. And that he lost his hometown, and that the margins are so far earlier polls, but polls are BS. Apparently they’re on state TV now saying that Mahinda has won, but the Elections Commissioner is nowhere in sight. I really really don’t know. I call around and nobody knows, we just trade rumors. Such is the void into which we are cast.

If u don’t know the process, just keep quite. Comissioner will come on air (recorded) when election is concluded.

It might be possible since SF is on housearrest http://bit.ly/cT7KBU , and there have been no news about the elec’ comissioner.

God save SL !

I heard a rumour that the Commission was arrested. Also heard a rumour that some million fraudulant ballots were brought to polling boths, and that’s why they delayed annoucing results for so long.

Heard that too, and also that the officers of the elections commissioner along with the computer system had been replaced.

The results in Colombo look suspicious but thats about all.

Sorry to sound so insensitive, but whatever means were employed by Mahinda, it doesn’t really matter to Indians as long as the hawkish & pro-pakistan Fonseka didn’t get to be the commander-in-chief of 3,00,000 troops south of India.

Only wish that Gotabhaya will be de-fanged and Mahinda truly gets a change-of-heart and presses all instituitions under his command to work for the betterment of both Tamils & Sinhalese alike.
