What I Hope For The 27th

Taking posters down, from Perambara

Firstly, roughly the same number of human beings we had on the 26th. Second, I hope that Sarath Fonseka wins. I hope that he becomes the first leader in generations to follow the Constitution, or at least not completely disregard it. I hope that the jumbo cabinet is dismantled and people like Mervyn Silva have to live under the same law as the rest of us. I hope for change.

If there’s a free and fair election I think Sarath can win. Mahinda winning, however, seems like a likely income. So if you want change it is important to get out and vote. People say it’s the choice between a known devil and an unknown devil, but I think it’s more the choice between a feudal past and the future. Plus, I prefer the unknown anyways.

We know that Mahinda and his coterie are going to drain the country and the generally ignore the laws. I also think that there will be some development and we’ll proceed, but not apace. Under Sarath, however, there is not so much coterie and I think we’ll get some discipline. At the very least, however, it is a change, and a chance to shake some of the rot out of our system.

Either way, I however, I hope for a better future on the 27th. I think it’ll be the best possible with Sarath, but I’m not afraid of Mahinda. Well, a little bit.

I think people will die tomorrow, regardless of who wins. This isn’t 2005. We’ve breathed in a lot of hatred… Post election violence will be the name of the day especially if Fonseka wins. Hah, I personally would go down to Kelaniya to democratise Dr. Silva.

Why so much hate man ? Accept the verdict of people and move on…Elections are just elections, some will win some will loose. Hopefully, you will get another turn to take your revenge in a few years time at another election.

Everyone hates Mervin and your beloved leader is the only one in the country who loves him since he’s so ‘sensitive’

There will definitely be violence, regardless of the outcome. But I hope it’ll be limited. :(

Mny people support SF in the belief that they will get the ‘change’ they wish for.

After one year of Obama, many good people in US are disillusioned. They are dissapointment by seeing a powerless Obama who is ultimately being coopted by the system. Republicans still set the agenda and forestall anything they don’t like. Democrats as usual are acting liky clumsy amateurs.

Let’s hope Fonseka lives up to the hype. He seems to have roped in a large number of well meaning, intelligent people to believe in him without any shred of evidence to support any of his claims. In the long run, substance matters way more than the in a democratic set up like in Sri Lanka.

Fonseka’s coalition has all the ingredients for a major disaster, and the candidate himself is probably the least qualified to take Sri Lanka forward in the post-LTTE Sri Lanka, given the long history of democracy and civilian rule.

Good luck either way. You will have have to live with the decisions you make.

I hope Fonseka does not win. At least with Mahinda we know what we’re getting. With Fonseka, all bets are off.

The man is not a politician, he is not a democrat. If you thought Mahinda was bad, Fonseka will be infinitely worse.

People want change. It would be nice if they wanted positive change instead of change for the sake of change.

Don’t let this country go down the path of Pakistan and Burma. Vote for democracy. Please.

Fonseka gave up the uniform, it’s hard to have a military dictator that’s not in the military. In Pakistan (at the time) and Burma the rulers had direct control over the Army.

If anyone’s displaying dictatorial tendencies it’s Mahinda, consolidating so much of the budget and power within his family. Fonseka gave up whatever power he had to run, if he comes in he comes in as a civilian.

Dear Indi,

Please don’t display your ignorance so shamelessly.

A man does not have to be in the military to be the commander in chief.

That’s the guy we call the President.

(And how quickly you’ve forgotten your own comments on why Fonseka announced his run.)

@Tikiri

Couldn’t Mahinda then equally be a military dictator?

Point being he hasn’t yet. Why take a chance on an unknown?

“If there’s a free and fair”..
Illegal campaigning and spamming on government media still continues. Such as taking Vijitha Herath into custody.

If Vijitha Herath was on a bus with 40 armed army deserters, he does deserve to be questioned, don’t you think?

@Tikiri Banda If he really was, do you think state media will let him go without capturing a video and showing it ?
