Three Arrested For Facebook

From Mahinda’s now defunct Facebook page, which was hilarious
Apparently three chaps have been arrested for sending false rumors over SMS and Facebook. I wonder if it’s those damn 94112512102 buggers that have been bunging up my inbox, though that stuff was pro-Mahinda. The problem with the law here is that it tends to be just another thing to bash people over the head with. I don’t know anything more about this case besides the SMS that came out of Ada Derana. I wonder if they’re also going to crack down on the people that spread false info through Rupavahini and state media. The SMS election spam is a problem and it went both ways. I personally got the most from the MR camp. I wonder who the chaps that got busted are.
I post this mostly because friends immediately called to ask if I was in jail. So I’m not. Any rumors quoted here are clearly labeled as such and doused with salt. Plus I would somehow Twitter if I was in jail.

This is highly dubious. Miss Travel is a travel/social networking site that connects ‘Generous’ and ‘Attractive’ travelers. To, like, travel together, I guess. It all seems a bit like arranged prostitution and trafficking. This is part of a broader online trend to connect rich men to younger, attractive women. Sites like
Sri Lankan domestics never say anything, they just stop coming. My maid just stopped coming and when I finally pressed her she said I needed to get a washing machine. I was hoping to ride this one out, but I’ve run out of underwear and I have no choice. I finally caved and bought a washing machine, from
Your title is misleading. 3 for SMS + Facebook. We have to look more details into this. Otherwise it would be like last time arrest in Matale.
If it is an organized attempt to bring down the law and order they should be arrested. I also complained about “Sarath Fonseka -Next Sri Lankan President” to the facebook authorities. They were trying to spread rumors and organize public protest in front of Lake House. But now the group, which had 65,000 fans, has vanished.
Anyone should have right to criticize the government but not to disrupt law and order without any justifiable actions. This is what happened in Iran. We only know what international medial told us. Similar things were in BBC, etc yesterday. So they were expecting something to happen.
“Meanwhile, US strategic think-tank ‘Stratfor’ said the political drama will likely play out over the next several days, but so far it appears that incumbent Mahinda Rajapakse has the means to keep Fonseka isolated and secure his political position.”

Get these facts straight;
First of all these were aimed at in sighting protests/riots/violence! In sighting violence is punishable by law! The sms with pro-MR stuff was not aimed at that, but then again if you want to charge that… charge the bugger who sent sms’s on the morning of election day wishing SF… that is more of an offence cause it broke the 48hour no campaigning law ;-)
Secondly, even though I don’t agree or rather I despise the way the Government used the state media institutions… how do you say “people that spread false info through Rupavahini and state media”….. let the courts decide if the info is false or not. Even the letter by the Comm. of Elections gives only his opinion, it could be challenged in court. Also there was always Sirasa which was above the law… there were airing bias talks shows and during the no campaigning 48 hours they ran press conferences and interviews of SF and his fellow clowns! ITN and Rupavahini broke the law to in a subtle way by spewing out adds that hinted at what MR did and stuff. So your arguments are bullshit! You guys break the law, but then you don’t see that you only see when the proponents break the law! We call this “Issa ge oluwe goo”
Well on of the chaps who got busted of it is the editor of the JVPs Lanka Newspaper… the dumbass had used his own phone + others to send out sms … LOL!
Yeh man! he fated. i fated. who fated?
Don’t say “Indige ge oluwe goo” :-)
I think Ahmadinajad lost the election. Those kinds of riots doesn’t just happen without reason… Here in SL though, even though the election wasn’t completely free & fair, it is clear that Mahinda won.
Those kind of things, like in Iran, happen if people are stupid. SF supporters also believed that they won. Some spread false rumors about this to take people to streets. But SL people are educated. They can not be cheated easily. We all know that Mahinda won it. (Even though some do not accept it publicly.)
mahasen bandaragama,
“Those kind of things, like in Iran, happen if people are stupid.”
hahaha brilliant.
Citation from Lankapage today:
“Defence spokesman and Foreign Employment Promotion Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said yesterday that the Government would not hesitate to arrest anyone whose conduct would be detrimental to national security.
He said that anyone who engaged in campaigns against national security and Sri Lanka’s sovereignt by sending false messages via mobile phones would be arrested forthwith and be dealt with according to the law.
That was why the government sealed the Lanka newspaper office, Rambukwella said.
He said the government had received information about people engaged in such anti-national campaigns and investigations had commenced.
The government was bound by its duty by the people to take action against those who were a threat to national security, the minister added.”
But both Lankatruth and Daily Mirror today reports the following (citation from Lankatruth) lawyers representing the newspaper reiterated that the ban has resulted in a violation of the right of expressing one’s opinion, guaranteed under the Constitution. They also pointed out that the ban violated the Constitutional right of equality for all before the law. They noted that the article in question over which the newspaper was banned, was carried on January 17th 2010 and has had no bearing whatsoever on the security status of the country nor has it affected its stability. Additionally, the CID has so far been unable to furnish the court with any adequate proof of the charges framed against the newspaper.
Having heard both sides, the Magistrate ruled that the CID had not presented adequate evidence in favour of the ban and therefore, court was moving to ensure the right of the people to information. ”
As long there are objective courts and judiciary, the MR government can´t make false accusations, without evidence.
So there is still hope that the government can´t twist the law and the constitutions according to their own wishes.
