Street Hair
Lately I’ve been seeing a lot of hair on the streets. I once got a small hair scrunchy as a joke, but now they have full wearable hairstyles, attached to alice bands and clips. They’re not even nice hairstyles (if that’s possible), it’s more like someone scalped the drummer in a hotel band. As you can see above, some of the styles even have that wet jheri curl look. What surprises me is not that these things exist, but that they’re now everywhere. Are people actually wearing artificial hair?
More horrifying, is this real hair? I bought a small clip for Rs. 150 and it actually looks and feels like real hair. So are outstation lathas shaving their heads for people in Colombo? And who are these people in Colombo? Are there that many balding lounge acts that need to supplement? Most other things on the street have some use, and I presume they move. Mirrors, undershirts, socks, bags, pictures of fat babies. If they’re stocking the hair someone must be buying it. I mean, I buy it as a gag gift but that can’t be the whole economy. I wonder.

I was hoping to ride this one out, but I’ve run out of underwear and I have no choice. I finally caved and bought a washing machine, from
