Mervyn Silva Singing About Sarath Fonseka

Mervyn Silva is Sri Lanka’s court jester, with guns. He is unelected but serves as an appointed Minister. Him and his son have participated in many assaults and crimes but escape with impunity. I say participated rather than alleged because many of these events are televised. I’m not sure what exactly he does for Mahinda (and CBK before), but everyone needs a street catcher. This video is him singing a song about opposition candidate Sarath Fonseka. I don’t know where to start.

As far as I know Mervyn is now hosting a talent show on Swarnavahini. His prior hits including trying to disrupt the General’s visit to a temple with street thugs. Also assaulting the director of Rupavahini (the state owned TV station) and getting thrashed by the staff. The director later lost his job and many staff got stabbed on the bus, etc. His son is also known for flashing guns in nightclubs and assaulting innocents. I personally know a few people who’ve been assaulted by him or, more accurately, his taxpayer-funded guards. But I digress. I’ve been told many times not to even write about these characters because they scare people that much, and operate with government impunity.

One of the reasons I’m voting for Fonseka is in the hopes of throwing this lot out. Mahinda’s got a lot of venal types around him and I think we could use a clean sweep. Sarath would dissolve the jumbo cabinet and appoint a smaller (reasonable) caretaker one, so that’s cool by me. Mervyn is a national list MP, appointed by Mahinda, so a change in leadership would mean Mervyn is out of government. This would give him more time to focus on his music career, and make Sri Lanka a bit safer for everybody.

How are you so sure?

How can these seemingly intelligent people be so utterly naive?

I have no clue. But Sri Lankans are notorious for just blindly supporting political parties. I don’t think Indi is any different. If it’s UNP it’s okay.

He is. But I’m certain that if MR kicks him out, UNP wouldn’t mind re-employing him. Let’s not forget that even Indi took part in a march along-side Mervyn back in ’06. Mervyn represents everything that’s wrong with Sri Lankan politics. Although people had voted him out, I have little hope for Sri Lankans considering Duminda Silva managed to get the highest preferential votes in Colombo.

” Sarath would dissolve the jumbo cabinet and appoint a smaller (reasonable) caretaker one”

How can a single person be intelligent and naive at the same time ?

He has said that he is going to do it but has he even begun to tell people which portfolios will go ?
Triming down the cabinet , indeed and pigs will fly. He is a multi party candidate.
Common sense tells us that “multi party” and “small cabinet” is going to happen when pigs fly.

Come on, this is the guy who could not even com eup with an original campaign slogan but had to steal
Obama’s “Change you can trust” .

Indi, none of us have any guarantee that SF will abolish the Executive Presidency – the promise being the oldest trick in the book and if you are falling for it then so be it. The fact is, I do not want an Army MILITARY General running my country (Burmese Junta anyone?) which is supposed to be democratic and forward thinking – ok so we haven’t had anywhere near a good track record – but we are on the cusp of being able to change that. Not however with this guy in power.

At least we know MR and what they are like. Competition is good because it makes everyone sit up and take notice but with SF, we no nothing about him, who is his Prime Minister going to be? Sarath Silva? Ex-Chief Justice who demerged the NE and was so corrupt? CBK’s right hand man? I will be so very impressed if anything changes for the better with SF and I am hoping we won’t have to wonder.

There has not been a single governing party in Sri Lanka since independence without corruption, and with the same players planning to come in – it won’t change.

Fonseka has already backtracked on his promise of abolishing the executive presidency. I guess he woke up to the fact that he would be handing everything over to Ranil if went ahead with it.
