Tangalle

Bridge across the lagoon

I’m in Tangalle. It’s not Unawatuna and further south than Mirissa, so presumably cooler. It’s beautiful here, lush paddy on one side, lagoons and clear ocean on the other. The shelf drops and the sea is treacherous, but behind the rocks there are eddies of delight. The sea is clear and the blue green waves play with you without pulling you under.

Staying at the Lagoon Paradise, about 2000 a night ($20). Food is a bit expensive, but quite nice besides.

Tourists, mostly French, reading and boating

I was in Tangalle last week. The places really are beautiful but I was quite dismayed by the insensitive development taking place in the area with regard to hotels. A couple of outlets for the lagoon have been cut off by new roads causing the salinity in the lagoon to change and the mangroves to start dying back. Also one hotel I noted, Ganesh Gardens, has filled in a pathway to build a deck in the lagoon destroying mangroves. The effect on run off from this development into the lagoon also hasn’t been mitigated. It’s a shame that we have not learnt any lessons from the past decades about tourism development.

I was happy to only see a few expat mansions alongside Rekewa beach last year. I would hate to think that unattended development takes place and ruins Tangalle. Will someone write about this to the CEA and stop this before it turns into another Unawatuna?

“Is it true that Mervin silva was attacked by a gang of 50 army personals last Friday ?……….”

Of course it’s true but then Indie has always been known to go crawling around where whities hang out because he’s “Canadian” after all and he’s still got that drawl. Ask all the Norwegians, Germans, Pommes etc who knew him for his psychopanting ways back in the Tsunami days.

Sri Lanka is a great for child-molestors, the nasty trash from Europe, the US and the UK who, in the middle of a recession can’t afford to go anywhere else where the locals are “obliging in all manner of ways and eager to please”.

As for all the horrendous so called resorts that have been flung up anywhere and everywhere, I mean really how cheap is this country getting. It’s disgusting.

The Military State Of Mind:
  • jcnars: @rubbish, you hit the coin. Indi seems to have sold his soul of late. Sucking up to the govt. like a pro. @girigor, talking loud doesn't always means talking sense. We are in a period between wars, if: a) nuts like you don't STFU and b) china is allowed a naval base in SL....

Did Little Children Create God?:
  • Shammi: It's funny the way most of the stories and rituals in the bible have so much in common with legends of more ancient pagan civilizations. Bits of the tales of Gilgamesh, Dionysus et al are mirrored in the descriptioons of Noah, Moses, Jesus, the Holy Trinity and the holy family etc., even a trace of Solomon reflected in Mahoshada of the jataka tales. They could've been a little more creative at least. I think I'm...

  • Kids Say: No, little children didn't create god - insecure and ignorant people did. Believing in and worshipping a magical invisible creature in the sky gives a lot of people comfort and security. That said, little children can be wonderfully creative. Have you seen the show "Kids Say the Darndest Things"? (You can watch clips of the show on youtube). This sounds like something from that show: Christianity is the belief that a cosmic Jewish zombie who...

Othello:
  • Electra: Actually race has little to do with what Othello is actually about. Of course it does make an appearance here and there, but it's possible that the race theme has been slightly over-analysed (as is most of Shakespeare's work) by later interpreters. However - it deals with the equally potent themes of jealousy, obsession, paranoia, the idea of masculinity. To me those are the things that makes Othello a truly remarkable account of what is...

What’s Happening In Hambantota

Hambantota is the deep south. It's hot, dry and really weird looking in parts. You can hammer down the roads at 100 km and see for miles. Paddy fields, tanks, tropical deserts. Driving through Sri Lanka you mostly see a bunch of trees and the same Nestomalt dealer boards. In Hambantota you can see a lot of nature, and the roads are pretty fast. I don't recommend the town at all, but the district is

Sri Lanka, Best Place To Go In 2010

The New York Times recently said Sri Lanka is the number one place to go this year. I fully agree. Biased, obviously, but Sri Lanka really is a small miracle. You can get anywhere in this country within a day, and there are a million places that are awesome and different. The Times recommends Nilaveli (Trinco), Galle and Unawatuna. I'd make a few other recommendations, as well as the times of year it's best to

Sri Lanka: North, South, West

I basically saw everything this week. On Saturday I was in Padaviya, the transit hospital for warzone casualties (after Palmbudai). On Sunday I went inland thru Ratnapura to Hambantota. On Monday I was in a Hambantota jail. After a flurry of phone calls and very kind treatment and congenial chats with the police I was out. Then on Tuesday I went to Tangalle - 14km from Mahinda's hometown - to watch his speech. Then I

Textuality

I met a nice girl but I couldn't stand her text messages. I didn't want to see her l8r. I met another and we didn't use the phone at all. We shared books, I read her poetry. She told me stuff I didn't know, I wasn't talking to myself all the time. It was nice. Get back on the Internets and I can't read her emails. She didn't use full stops at all. I was

Mulkirigala Rock Temple Paintings

Mulkirigala is an ancient rock temple about 20km north of Tangalle. It has these amazing cave paintings depicting various sins and demons eating people. I could have spent forever in there just looking at all the detail. The caves are in different stages of restoration, the lower being basically repainted, one room which is pretty much original Kandyan style red/white/black, and then some hideous colonial era reconstructions. Then there is a stunning view from the
