Soul Funk Sunday

Dj Tareeq Musafer, of the DJ Academy

Most music in Colombo is horrid. I basically hear ‘Summer Of 69′ every time I go out, and I didn’t like it the first time. The other scene is rather hard house, which requires chemical zombification to enjoy. One musical oasis, however, is now Soul Funk Sunday. Every third Sunday DJs spin really good old-school vinyl at the Park Street Mews. I went for the first time yesterday and quite enjoyed it. The music had, like, actual instruments and they were songs I hadn’t heard every night of my life. God willing, Colombo may be happening again.

They play a variety of stuff James Brown, George Clinton, Bill Withers, etc, which I’m cribbing from their Facebook Group. This is one song I remember. It’s ‘Just An Illusion’ by Imagination. It feels a bit effete but I’m OK with that.

Just An Illusion, by Imagination (MP3)

The next Soul Funk Sunday will be next week I presume. I for one wholly support different and better music in Colombo. I le recommend. You can check out the Facebook Group for more.

Thanks for the encouraging comments!
Soul Funk Sunday usually happens every 3rd Sunday of the month!
But in Jan. we have moved it to the 24th. Hopefully from Feb. onwards the event will be more regular, on the 2nd & 4th Sunday!

The Military State Of Mind:
  • jcnars: @rubbish, you hit the coin. Indi seems to have sold his soul of late. Sucking up to the govt. like a pro. @girigor, talking loud doesn't always means talking sense. We are in a period between wars, if: a) nuts like you don't STFU and b) china is allowed a naval base in SL....

Tell me when the LTTE was around, did they even allow normal Sinhalese peeps to walk in to their area freely? Where were you then? Did you complain to the LTTE why...
  • myil selvan: dear indi, You as a Canadian sinhalese may find it hard to comprehend the nature of militarization. But for the sinhalese people, they find it good that the armed forces are around because almost all of them are sinhalese and past experience shows they will favour their own people, sadly. But for the Tamil people, they see it as an occupying force not interested in their welfare but only in holding real-estate. The coming days, months are...

Have you seen the bit of the old fortifications of Colombo left within the premises of the Commercial Bank building in Fort? Beware of the suspicious security guard there!...
Did Little Children Create God?:
  • Shammi: It's funny the way most of the stories and rituals in the bible have so much in common with legends of more ancient pagan civilizations. Bits of the tales of Gilgamesh, Dionysus et al are mirrored in the descriptioons of Noah, Moses, Jesus, the Holy Trinity and the holy family etc., even a trace of Solomon reflected in Mahoshada of the jataka tales. They could've been a little more creative at least. I think I'm...
  • Whacko: the question is why we stop asking these questions when we are adults...
  • Kids Say: No, little children didn't create god - insecure and ignorant people did. Believing in and worshipping a magical invisible creature in the sky gives a lot of people comfort and security. That said, little children can be wonderfully creative. Have you seen the show "Kids Say the Darndest Things"? (You can watch clips of the show on youtube). This sounds like something from that show: Christianity is the belief that a cosmic Jewish zombie who...

Othello:
  • Electra: Actually race has little to do with what Othello is actually about. Of course it does make an appearance here and there, but it's possible that the race theme has been slightly over-analysed (as is most of Shakespeare's work) by later interpreters. However - it deals with the equally potent themes of jealousy, obsession, paranoia, the idea of masculinity. To me those are the things that makes Othello a truly remarkable account of what is...

A Horse in Downtown Colombo

This is a photo of a horse in downtown Colombo. I don't know what it was doing there. I was walking to the beach from a meeting with Sujan at the Sunday Times. They like the magazine idea - but they're 'thinking' about profit sharing. Which means, er, don't count on it. It was a kinda muggy day in Colombo. I went to the Kollupitiya bus station and looked

Mohan Ariyaratne, 1946-2009

My friend Mohan Ariyaratne died yesterday, after a long struggle with cancer. He was in pain for a while but he's passed now. His mind was sharp till the end and he was still teasing me about my pink iPod, telling stories about yachting around the world and hanging out with Jimi Hendrix. I was going to see him today but now it's too late. I miss him a lot.

Sunday Leader Column: Article 14

I've started writing a column for the Sunday Leader (the late Lasantha's paper). The first one is out this Sunday, being today. I generally avoid the local papers, because I don't want to spend the day weeping uncontrollably. But I suppose i'll venture out to the kade. The article is online anyways. I think the Leader is third in circulation behind the Observer (for the classifieds) and the Sunday Times, but it's always been first

For The Benefit Of Mr. Mo

So, my friend Mo has cancer. He's done the first round of chemo, which was promising, and now onto the next. He's in good spirits and the harem is holding it down. That said, chemo costs money and the only trees growing round here are social networks. Hence Mo's friends are having a 'Mo Better Blues' benefit at Barefoot on April 27th. Triloka, the Barefoot Jazz Band, Southern Jazz Project and many more will be

Cowards of Colombo (Sunday Leader)

Wrote a piece for today's Sunday Leader called Cowards of Colombo. It's about the choking apathy of this city, and how we need to wake up. Actually, apathy I don't even mind, it's about this city which complains yet does not act. I think we need to put our money and our time where our mouths are, if we want to be taken seriously as human beings. The website is still a bit hacked up
