Sari Shopping In Colombo

Picking out cloth

A family friend was in from out of town and wanted to go sari shopping. I know nothing about this, but I asked around. We ended up at Rasi Silks (Wellawatte, off Hampden Rd), but there are a variety of places. To my knowledge there are numerous spots for the posh, and then spot rushes for the frugal. Personally, I think I’d recommend going to India.

Posh

Uh, I really don’t know, but the recommendations I got were Riththi, on Alfred House and then some place that has Satya Paul saris on Horton Place. And then Odel has a ‘Sari Bar’. I presume all those are expensive. But nice.

Rush

Then there are the street recommendations, like Main Street in Pettah, Orchard Street opposite Savoy, etc. Shops would be Ranjana’s in Pettah, Mandir in Wellawatte, and I suppose Rasi Silks would be on that list.

I’m personally not that impressed. I like the Tamil style saris but they’re a bit rigid and don’t always drape well. The best saris I’ve seen have been in Udappu, but I think they get them down from India. For weddings people tend to go there. I’m not convinced that Colombo is even that great for saris at all.

The Military State Of Mind:
  • jcnars: @rubbish, you hit the coin. Indi seems to have sold his soul of late. Sucking up to the govt. like a pro. @girigor, talking loud doesn't always means talking sense. We are in a period between wars, if: a) nuts like you don't STFU and b) china is allowed a naval base in SL....

Tell me when the LTTE was around, did they even allow normal Sinhalese peeps to walk in to their area freely? Where were you then? Did you complain to the LTTE why...
  • myil selvan: dear indi, You as a Canadian sinhalese may find it hard to comprehend the nature of militarization. But for the sinhalese people, they find it good that the armed forces are around because almost all of them are sinhalese and past experience shows they will favour their own people, sadly. But for the Tamil people, they see it as an occupying force not interested in their welfare but only in holding real-estate. The coming days, months are...

Have you seen the bit of the old fortifications of Colombo left within the premises of the Commercial Bank building in Fort? Beware of the suspicious security guard there!...
Did Little Children Create God?:
  • Shammi: It's funny the way most of the stories and rituals in the bible have so much in common with legends of more ancient pagan civilizations. Bits of the tales of Gilgamesh, Dionysus et al are mirrored in the descriptioons of Noah, Moses, Jesus, the Holy Trinity and the holy family etc., even a trace of Solomon reflected in Mahoshada of the jataka tales. They could've been a little more creative at least. I think I'm...

  • Kids Say: No, little children didn't create god - insecure and ignorant people did. Believing in and worshipping a magical invisible creature in the sky gives a lot of people comfort and security. That said, little children can be wonderfully creative. Have you seen the show "Kids Say the Darndest Things"? (You can watch clips of the show on youtube). This sounds like something from that show: Christianity is the belief that a cosmic Jewish zombie who...

Othello:
  • Electra: Actually race has little to do with what Othello is actually about. Of course it does make an appearance here and there, but it's possible that the race theme has been slightly over-analysed (as is most of Shakespeare's work) by later interpreters. However - it deals with the equally potent themes of jealousy, obsession, paranoia, the idea of masculinity. To me those are the things that makes Othello a truly remarkable account of what is...

Chennai. Not A Hole

Chennai Central smells like pee for about a kilometer around. I get off at Egmore. It's another world. I'm not saying it's fragrant, but Chennai is more green than Hyderabad or Bangalore. It's actually kinda happening. I walk towards the Buddhist stupa at a Sri Lankan center. They tell me I can't meditate there, they're just showing dubbed cartoons in Sinhala. I keep going, find some breakfast. I'm really trying to avoid bathrooms in Tamil

Navy Under Attack in Galle

News is sketchy, but LBO and Jasmine are reporting that “bombs went off near the harbour and there is some gunfire.” The Colombo DIG says an attack on the Galle Naval camp is going on. Gadjits 3: Crescat Mall

Today I went shop for Xmas Tech Gift Ideas at Crescat Mall, which is actually a real mall, as opposed to the glorified bazaar I visited yesterday. I found the Ericcson Z200 phone I was looking for, and a potentially good store. I also spent an inordinate amount looking at greeting cards and India Barbie with my cousins, Eran (9) and Senuri (7). The photo is of Eran running up the
