Photos: The Station, Fire And Ice

fire and ice
Oh, I’ve seen fire and I’ve seen ice

The closest Colombo has to a decent beach is Mount Lavinia. The best hang out spot there is probably Buba. Closer, however, is this place I recently discovered called The Station. From Galle Road you turn right at the Williams Grinding Mills. This is Dehiwela, almost Wellawatte. If you continue all the way down you get to a beach shack with decent food and cheap drinks. The usual cuttlefish and stuff, though I got the boiled vegetables (which is nicer than it sounds). I am newly enamored of this camera and I spent most of my time photographing the candle lamp. I suppose that’s about as interesting as a bar’s navel, but here are a few shots.

I’ve had the experience of them mixing drinks… and not in a good way! Results were a very quick high and a terrible hangover the next day.

The English Speaking Elite:
  • Mahinda: This is sort of a forum, isn't it? What I mean is that Indi posts something, everyone has a quick read, then starts using this space to air their own views and spread their own message or start their own little (quite often completely unrelated) arguments or whatever... Its got an organic quality, which I think is quite nice......
  • The way of the Dodo: I think we should take some of this stuff and create a forum. That allows for better discussion and more mature dialog. What do you guys think...
  • Mahinda: Just curious... Didn't mean to offend....
Much More Mahinda:
  • Mahinda: Lousy, uninteresting comeback with only mild entertainment value. Where's the wit? Where's the logic/justification to the comment? I'm disappointed in you......
  • David Blacker: Mahinda, I doubt you'd make a good bench press, never mind a press sec....
  • Mahinda: Machang Blacker! Where have you been??! Were you busy washing your hair or something? Oh sorry - you don't have hair, no? So why the offensive attitude? Don't you think I'd make a good press sec? ;)...
The Final Cross:
  • Mahinda: Flyovers, if effectively used, are an excellent method of improving the flow of traffic and congestion. Since you guys don't think the ones that have been built work terribly well towards that objective, lets just blame Mahinda and the Government for this and move on :) Ok. That was just a little joke, but on a serious note, I think development should be well thought out and also implemented in the most cost effective manner. Which...
  • Anon: To add to what Dodo say, before the fly-over there was stop-go traffic at the Dehiwala junction. After the flyover there is a continuous, but slow flow of traffic. Although I use that road only rarely in my limited experience the length of the queue and the time taken to travel is no better after the flyover, and may be slightly worse. Moving the bus stand would be an improvement at Dehiwala, think Nugegoda is somewhat more...
  • Anon: Thanks Shammi, there was a very good interview in the Nation a few years back that opened my eyes to him. Think he did a fair job at the port and according to reports did not take a large "grant" that was in the offing. Agree with Dodo that Mangala's chances of getting elected at the moment look pretty slip....

Indian Terrorism

India is one of the few bright spots in the coming global clusterfuck to the poor house. I've been reading the business news from there for some ray of light. Things there, however, seem to have gotten mara fucked up, what with the terrorist attacks on everything in Mumbai. Terrorists simultaneously attacked a railway station, hospital, the docks, police headquarters and major hotels. It sounds like the just walked in and opened fire in these

The Ever Present Quest For Crab

If there's one thing that seems to unite Sri Lankan travellers, it's the constant quest for crab. This flesh of sea insect is craved and devoured by all ranks and stations with gusto. I have spent many hours driving around extremely random places for crab, especially lagoon crab, effectively the cocaine of crab connoisseurs. Personally I find crab a bit stressful being as you sorta have to kill the thing again to get the meat

Bomb Attack on President’s Brother

Just getting tenative reports, but a friend sent me a text at 10h40 saying, 'Heard a big explosion from my house, then what sounded like gunfire. Maybe fire crackers who knows'. Didn't think much of it, but then I got more reports that something was going on, and now the phone lines are clogged. He's on 5th Lane and he seems to think the bomb was on Flower Road. Apparently it was on Dharmapala Mawatha
