Burgers King. Few more shots

I’m going to try to post some photos every day. These are a few shots I took recently. Above is a scene from Burgers King. I think my friend Eraj actually took this shot. This is a roadside eatery at the corner of Malay and Union Street. It started off as just a cart but now it has a sign and everything. It is not, in fact, a branch of Burger King. I had a shawarma in the past which I thought mediocre, but I had a chicken burger last night and it was delish. The place is only open in the evenings, like many joints in this healthy diet unfriendly town.

I went to see the kids and Neha and I did some coloring. The above is actually done by her father, Deshan. I find the entire Barbie scene a bit disturbing. This booklet seemed to be her tween cousins or something and I thought their shorts were entirely too short. But I digress. I also daresay that crayon is quite difficult to do anything decent with, though the kids are at an abstract stage of development. I personally find it hard to work with.

Rubix Cube water tower, Colombo 8 I think

This is a giant water tower which looks like a very big Rubix Cube. If it were a Rubix Cube it would be 8×8 and nearly impossible to solve. Not to mention difficult to manipulate.

I canz not read this. Is too long

This is Damian the cat sleeping on my book. I’ve been reading ‘The Hindus‘ by Wendy Doninger. Which, while witty, is mad long and dense. Damian’s reaction is, at times, appropriate. For more amusing cat photos, the lolcats at icanhascheezburger.com are, er, amusing.

The rubix water tower is what supplies the National hospital. It’s pretty huge close up….As a kid I once climbed nearly to the top… great view, except when looking down… which is scary!

I’ve wanted to eat at that place for sometime. Couldn’t find a time. Should go there soon.

I once saw a 10x10x10 rubik’s cube being solved in less than 6 minutes on youtube. Couldn’t find that video now. Here’s a 7x7x7 cube solve http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=232J2WMwHTg

The Military State Of Mind:
  • jcnars: @rubbish, you hit the coin. Indi seems to have sold his soul of late. Sucking up to the govt. like a pro. @girigor, talking loud doesn't always means talking sense. We are in a period between wars, if: a) nuts like you don't STFU and b) china is allowed a naval base in SL....

Tell me when the LTTE was around, did they even allow normal Sinhalese peeps to walk in to their area freely? Where were you then? Did you complain to the LTTE why...
  • myil selvan: dear indi, You as a Canadian sinhalese may find it hard to comprehend the nature of militarization. But for the sinhalese people, they find it good that the armed forces are around because almost all of them are sinhalese and past experience shows they will favour their own people, sadly. But for the Tamil people, they see it as an occupying force not interested in their welfare but only in holding real-estate. The coming days, months are...

Have you seen the bit of the old fortifications of Colombo left within the premises of the Commercial Bank building in Fort? Beware of the suspicious security guard there!...
Did Little Children Create God?:
  • Shammi: It's funny the way most of the stories and rituals in the bible have so much in common with legends of more ancient pagan civilizations. Bits of the tales of Gilgamesh, Dionysus et al are mirrored in the descriptioons of Noah, Moses, Jesus, the Holy Trinity and the holy family etc., even a trace of Solomon reflected in Mahoshada of the jataka tales. They could've been a little more creative at least. I think I'm...

  • Kids Say: No, little children didn't create god - insecure and ignorant people did. Believing in and worshipping a magical invisible creature in the sky gives a lot of people comfort and security. That said, little children can be wonderfully creative. Have you seen the show "Kids Say the Darndest Things"? (You can watch clips of the show on youtube). This sounds like something from that show: Christianity is the belief that a cosmic Jewish zombie who...

Othello:
  • Electra: Actually race has little to do with what Othello is actually about. Of course it does make an appearance here and there, but it's possible that the race theme has been slightly over-analysed (as is most of Shakespeare's work) by later interpreters. However - it deals with the equally potent themes of jealousy, obsession, paranoia, the idea of masculinity. To me those are the things that makes Othello a truly remarkable account of what is...

The Last Jail Of The Last King

In the Ceylinco Life Insurance parking lot there is a small jail cell where the last King of Kandy was kept until he was deported to India by the British. One would not notice what appears to be a small shed if not for an inscription and a statue on the side. You can peer into the tiny chamber through bars and see paintings of King Vikrama Rajasinha, his wife, and the Brit who captured

The Futility Of Prosperity

I was reading American Psycho in which the homicidal maniac is lovingly detailing the features of his Walkman. That book in its loving and pathological detail documents a certain dated 1980s style decadence luxurious in the abstract but moreso in relativity. That is luxury is relative to the plebes you can lord it over. Take any medieval king of England and I, with access to flush toilets, anti-biotics and airplanes, have it incomparably better then
