Mahinda’s Public Funded Campaign

SLFP, suckling at the government teat

There are certain people who online who hate me, but I think Voice In Colombo and I have reached a détente and, dare I say, mutual respect. I don’t agree with him, but I think he’s rational. He for example, supports Mahinda Rajapakse (this election) but even so is offended by the use of state media for the SLFP campaign. He says that Rupavahini and ITN are running stuff not just backing the government, but the governing party. This, I think, is wrong, and it’s only the tip of the iceberg.

Take Mihin Lanka for example, and its advertising. The logo of this state owned airline is the lotus symbol of the SLFP. It’s like if the UNP decided to run Elephant Airlines and get the state to pay for the advertising. It’s just baldly unfair. The logo of the airline is the logo of the party. Not only is the state owned airline hemorrhaging public money, it’s also spending it on political ends. This is not to mention the printed money with Mahinda on it, many government offices displaying Mahinda hoardings outside, the free lunches for constituencies on public funds, etc, much of this in contravention of election law.

I mean, I’m a taxpayer and I’m not opposed to the government, but that doesn’t mean I want my money to support the governing party. When MR supporters like VIC think the use of public funds has gone too far, I think it’s gone too far.

Unfortune is, still, many in the country does not understand it – OR try to stay blind.

Oh leave the whining at home with your undies you loser. Stop feeling sorry for yourself too, it’s despicable how you keep sitting on the fence trying to justify the criminals you are going to vote back in and thereby create the climate for a hardened and more determined LTTE to rise up again.

Rupavahini’s his, and everything else is his. All of us are his, and all we own is shit. Shit shit shit and shit, and some more Hudson’s shit.

The Military State Of Mind:
  • jcnars: @rubbish, you hit the coin. Indi seems to have sold his soul of late. Sucking up to the govt. like a pro. @girigor, talking loud doesn't always means talking sense. We are in a period between wars, if: a) nuts like you don't STFU and b) china is allowed a naval base in SL....
  • Girigoris the One: Tamils are being mistreated, Sinhalese should understand blah blah blah Yoy say "But for the sinhalese people, they find it good that the armed forces are around because almost all of them are sinhalese and past experience shows they will favour their own people, sadly." Tell me when the LTTE was around, did they even allow normal Sinhalese peeps to walk in to their area freely? Where were you then? Did you complain to the LTTE why...
  • myil selvan: dear indi, You as a Canadian sinhalese may find it hard to comprehend the nature of militarization. But for the sinhalese people, they find it good that the armed forces are around because almost all of them are sinhalese and past experience shows they will favour their own people, sadly. But for the Tamil people, they see it as an occupying force not interested in their welfare but only in holding real-estate. The coming days, months are...

Have you seen the bit of the old fortifications of Colombo left within the premises of the Commercial Bank building in Fort? Beware of the suspicious security guard there!...
Did Little Children Create God?:
  • Shammi: It's funny the way most of the stories and rituals in the bible have so much in common with legends of more ancient pagan civilizations. Bits of the tales of Gilgamesh, Dionysus et al are mirrored in the descriptioons of Noah, Moses, Jesus, the Holy Trinity and the holy family etc., even a trace of Solomon reflected in Mahoshada of the jataka tales. They could've been a little more creative at least. I think I'm...
  • Whacko: the question is why we stop asking these questions when we are adults...
  • Kids Say: No, little children didn't create god - insecure and ignorant people did. Believing in and worshipping a magical invisible creature in the sky gives a lot of people comfort and security. That said, little children can be wonderfully creative. Have you seen the show "Kids Say the Darndest Things"? (You can watch clips of the show on youtube). This sounds like something from that show: Christianity is the belief that a cosmic Jewish zombie who...

Othello:
  • Electra: Actually race has little to do with what Othello is actually about. Of course it does make an appearance here and there, but it's possible that the race theme has been slightly over-analysed (as is most of Shakespeare's work) by later interpreters. However - it deals with the equally potent themes of jealousy, obsession, paranoia, the idea of masculinity. To me those are the things that makes Othello a truly remarkable account of what is...

Mahinda’s 360 Campaign

I was down south over the holidays, and the streets were covered with Mahinda posters and hoardings. This is in violation of the Elections Commissioner's order that these be taken down. I also got an SMS from the PRESIDENT wishing us a happy New Year, literally from the guy who freed us. The campaign is powerful, but also illegal, wasteful, and noxious to both eye and mind.

Mahinda For Team Mascot

Ever since Mahinda was made Prime Minister I haven't seen him do anything except photo ops. Temple, church, mul galas, ribbon-cuttings, conferences, openings, closings. He is a veritable party clown of a statesman, available for birthdays and bar mitzvahs. In his time of office he has accomplished jack shit, but he's looked good doing it. Even now his marketing relies on his moustache and JVP noose, funded by the bookie Sumithapala

Elections Commission Omission

The President is daily giving buffets to 3,000 monks/cops/faculty at a time. Various government agencies (English and IT for example) are running ads praising him. The Road Development Authority is pasting posters for him and various government officers are posting pictures of him outside (including the OIC/Police Chief in Kohuwela, I think). And that's just the stuff I know about. There is a grey area between Presidential duties and a campaign, but Mahinda is way

Mahinda’s Final Rally

By God's grace and the limping heart of our elections commissioner, Presidential campaigning is over. These are some photos from Perambara's coverage of Mahinda Rajapaksa's final rally, in Piliyandala. Dude has been macking it hard this campaign, even illegally (cut-outs, distributing food, using state resources). That said, this is somewhat the nature of the ruler and people may be content to vote for development sans rule of law. His campaign events have been huge, busing

Mahinda’s War

Mahinda Rajapakse started this phase of the war. I'm not really out on a limb here. Yes the LTTE are terrorists and have continually provoked us. However, Mahinda has never voiced any support for a negotiated settlement and he has actively pursued a military solution. Ranil and CBK to a lesser degree made compromises and pursued peace talks. Mahinda, from his Chinthana to his statements today, only gives it enough lip to look OK internationally.
