Jerome and Glen In Concert For ACT

Glen Terry (blog post) and Jerome Speldewinde (photos) are in town, and always put on a great show. They’re doing a concert tonight (Monday, 8PM) at Barefoot, and proceeds go to ACT Lanka. Which is a citizens group that has and continues to help people affected by war. Glen and Jerome are, if you’re unfamiliar great Sri Lankan entertainers now based in Australia. They’re not in town much and it’s always fun when they are. I saw them last Saturday at the DBU for example, and all the Burgher ladies were going crazy.

Barefoot is another good venue and since, as mentioned, the two are entertainers, I think people will dance and it will be fun at all. Also, the gate of Rs. 500 goes towards ACT’s ongoing work helping people affected by war. Anyone following this blog saw how I worked with them as they were supplying urgent medical relief right at the end of the war. That work has been ongoing, plus drama and sports and arts workshops and general showing up and being there. ACT is interesting cause it’s a citizens group with basically no salary or overheads, it just formed in response to a national crisis and helps on a very person to person level.

But I digress. More than anything it’ll be a great show, for a good cause. I recommend.

The Military State Of Mind:
  • jcnars: @rubbish, you hit the coin. Indi seems to have sold his soul of late. Sucking up to the govt. like a pro. @girigor, talking loud doesn't always means talking sense. We are in a period between wars, if: a) nuts like you don't STFU and b) china is allowed a naval base in SL....
  • Girigoris the One: Tamils are being mistreated, Sinhalese should understand blah blah blah Yoy say "But for the sinhalese people, they find it good that the armed forces are around because almost all of them are sinhalese and past experience shows they will favour their own people, sadly." Tell me when the LTTE was around, did they even allow normal Sinhalese peeps to walk in to their area freely? Where were you then? Did you complain to the LTTE why...
  • myil selvan: dear indi, You as a Canadian sinhalese may find it hard to comprehend the nature of militarization. But for the sinhalese people, they find it good that the armed forces are around because almost all of them are sinhalese and past experience shows they will favour their own people, sadly. But for the Tamil people, they see it as an occupying force not interested in their welfare but only in holding real-estate. The coming days, months are...

Have you seen the bit of the old fortifications of Colombo left within the premises of the Commercial Bank building in Fort? Beware of the suspicious security guard there!...
Did Little Children Create God?:
  • Shammi: It's funny the way most of the stories and rituals in the bible have so much in common with legends of more ancient pagan civilizations. Bits of the tales of Gilgamesh, Dionysus et al are mirrored in the descriptioons of Noah, Moses, Jesus, the Holy Trinity and the holy family etc., even a trace of Solomon reflected in Mahoshada of the jataka tales. They could've been a little more creative at least. I think I'm...

  • Kids Say: No, little children didn't create god - insecure and ignorant people did. Believing in and worshipping a magical invisible creature in the sky gives a lot of people comfort and security. That said, little children can be wonderfully creative. Have you seen the show "Kids Say the Darndest Things"? (You can watch clips of the show on youtube). This sounds like something from that show: Christianity is the belief that a cosmic Jewish zombie who...

Othello:
  • Electra: Actually race has little to do with what Othello is actually about. Of course it does make an appearance here and there, but it's possible that the race theme has been slightly over-analysed (as is most of Shakespeare's work) by later interpreters. However - it deals with the equally potent themes of jealousy, obsession, paranoia, the idea of masculinity. To me those are the things that makes Othello a truly remarkable account of what is...

Glen Terry Concert

I should say, as per the photo, the Glen Terry concert was amazing. IMHO, concerts are often as much about the audience as the band. The band, of course, was excellent - gathered from Chicago, Mauritius and Sri Lanka. I was milling about with the usual reprobates near the bar when I noticed that people were out of their chairs and dancing. By people I mean girls. Then it started raining, like really coming down.

The Show Goes On

Life in Colombo goes on admists bombs and assorted detruitis, and that's a good thing. I certainly feel shit about all the displaced in Muttur and the families of the LTTE terror victims but Sri Lanka is a fun place and I don't think it's right to let that go. There was a year before the checkpoints and all where everything was just daisies and you could see how fun the town was. There is

Obama’s Inauguration At 10:30 PM Local

Historic event, etc, etc. Dialog TV says its the concert special is broadcast at 4:30 PM local on HBO, CNN and then at 7:30 on HBO Signature. Since it's CNN it should be watchable on mobile via MyTV. I assume that CNN and those guys also have webcasts. I watched most of the other events over the web and those were OK. The Democratic Convention in particular had really good streaming. This, however, I think

Brass Monkey Show – June 18

There's a Brass Monkey Band concert this Sunday at Barefoot. The last one was a lot of fun and generated a lot of buzz online and off. I think this is Swinly's farewell concert as she's going abroad for some period of time. Despite performing quite infrequently they have a pretty big fan base and a plethora of groupies, both male and female. They're all talented musicians - piano, guitar, tabla, bass, drums - and

Brass Monkey Concert

I would say the Brass Monkey concert was awesome. The dance floor was dominated by a toddler and an 80 year old man left his crutch by the piano to do the twist with the bassist. By the end of the night there was a 7 year old on the mike and Anik (?) was singing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star with a giant snake. It was great cause it was alive, and
