Kottu Print 2

Kottu Print 2 (PDF). One cover photo from Sigma Delta

There’s another ‘issue’ of Kottu Print deep in the Sunday Leader today (Review section). Have a look I suppose. There has been some debate about the selection criteria for the articles. I suppose what it comes down to in the end it that I choose. I am not particularly fond of control, but I can’t think of a simpler way. I pay attention to stuff that gets a lot of clicks (cause I don’t have time to read everything) and I took suggestions via comments.

In the future I guess I’ll post what I’m considering beforehand to see if A) the bloggers actually want those posts published and B) if there are any suggestions/objections. The alternatives are making it completely click based (misses a lot and manipulable) or setting up committee or something (meetings, organization, echh).

Some other ideas I had was presenting blog content to other publications, paper and magazines. They all seem to need filler and often they’re copy pasting irrelevant crap from the Internets. I could go and talk to some of these chaps. Kottu doesn’t necessarily need to be bound to one particular publisher. I personally think it’d be cooler if the content appeared in many different mediums. One issue here is proper licensing of content. I’d recommend a Creative Commons license for everyone, and working contacts on blogs, but I don’t even have a license posted here. If I did I guess it’d be an Attribution License, the most liberal one.

Anyways, the print version is out today. You can download a PDF as well, tho that’s not exactly how it appears. I’m working on InDesign CS4 on a Mac. I have to save that as an INX file which opens in CS3, on my netbook. Then I have to save that as another INX file that will open on the ancient CS2 they’re using at the Leader. So I’m never quite sure how the thing will print.

The printer has also been burnt down twice and their photo reproduction is not the best. Ahem.

Ahamed Nizar had an interesting point on his blog about being safe on Kottu.

Being on Kottu, obviously the blogger wouldn’t mind also being in print, if properly credited. But what about the commentors? Especially the ones who use their real names. After all, being in print takes the message to different audience than that a blog commentor might expect.

Just a thought.

Not sure about that. The mere fact that it is published in the blog of their own -and appears in the blogroll – doesn;t mean that they want it on print. It means that they like it in their blog. It would be unethicalto print without prior consent from the writers.

Fantastic.
Looks great.
I have of course not seen the print edition.

Cerno’s top 100 posts were quite a democratic process, I guess.

This seem the same too. Anyhow the whole thing is such a neat idea :) Super.

i suggested to Cerno to set up a survey on http://www.surveymonkey.com so that people could vote for the Top 100 posts and I think you could do the same here.

You may want to reduce the frequency of the print edition to once or twice a month and setup up the process accordingly

HI Indi,

Good follow up.
I used to proof read for a living so , being a bit A-R, I noticed a homonym in the post by Going Global where plain was used instead of plane ( Para 1 Line 3).

Are you going to edit these articles or leave them as is?

Indi, good stuff.
Must ask home to buy and keep all the mags so I get to see them when I return. How was the print quality btw?

And about the selection process, I think you (or a few other guys) choosing is alright, but I do think going by the clicks is not really, well, correct. Best way I think maybe you could ask readers to submit articles a week or so in advance and then pick from them.

Speak to Sebastian Posing-As-A-Photographer; he has become an expert on offset print issues.
