Human/Elephant Conflict

So, we rented some push bikes and set off for Peanut Farm. 100 meters out of the gate, Jerry fell over and skinned his knees. He had blood running down his legs but the cuts weren’t deep. We said we’d wash it in the ocean and moved on. South of Arugam Bay is a surreal landscape, surrounded by a sea of dry paddy fields, parades of water buffaloes, peacocks. Even elephants.

We left Peanut Farm because it was getting dark and we’d been warned not once or twice but thrice about elephants. At least I had. I also ran into an elephant on the way to the bar once (in Yala) and he tried to kill me. I avoid wild elephants like Minister’s sons, and I’d heard they were causing trouble in Arugam Bay.

The Good Part

So we’re on the main road back, a few meters from the STF (military police) camp. We see an elephant in the distance, like 100 meters away. This is a safe distance for an elephant, plus we’re on bikes. We stop to look. The elephant looks back. Then, in an instance, he’s surrounded by a cloud of dust. He’s charging us.

This would be terrifying, but he’s also a hundred meters away. And closing fast. Halik and I turn our bikes around to pedal away. Jerry dropped his bike like a little girl and ran away from the elephant on foot. There was a flatbed truck with like 15 people on it passing by and he ran towards the truck. When we saw him he was trying to clamber inside. The people were very confused.

We biked a safe distance and laughed our asses off. The thing is, we were all safe, but the elephant was still there, stalking Jerry’s bike like a prize. We were terrified that he was plotting a second attack and hemmed and hawed for a while until some guys with guns passed by.

Luckily, every third guy in that area has an automatic weapon capable of felling an elephant. So we crossed as those guys crossed, picked up Jerry’s bike and sped off. He’d been consistently lagging behind but he led the rest of the way home.

To refresh, relax and recharge your run down energy:
Consider to call in to see us on your way back.
A cool draft, all natural beer is waiting for both of you.
Where?
At the little SVH – in the middle of the Bay.
Cheers!

@Fred

As far as I can tell the Siam View House isn’t open. There’s chains on the door and the guy told us to wait outside. I wouldn’t recommend it.

The Military State Of Mind:
  • jcnars: @rubbish, you hit the coin. Indi seems to have sold his soul of late. Sucking up to the govt. like a pro. @girigor, talking loud doesn't always means talking sense. We are in a period between wars, if: a) nuts like you don't STFU and b) china is allowed a naval base in SL....

But for the Tamil people, they see it as an occupying force not interested in their welfare but only in holding real-estate. The coming days, months are...

Did Little Children Create God?:
  • Shammi: It's funny the way most of the stories and rituals in the bible have so much in common with legends of more ancient pagan civilizations. Bits of the tales of Gilgamesh, Dionysus et al are mirrored in the descriptioons of Noah, Moses, Jesus, the Holy Trinity and the holy family etc., even a trace of Solomon reflected in Mahoshada of the jataka tales. They could've been a little more creative at least. I think I'm...

  • Kids Say: No, little children didn't create god - insecure and ignorant people did. Believing in and worshipping a magical invisible creature in the sky gives a lot of people comfort and security. That said, little children can be wonderfully creative. Have you seen the show "Kids Say the Darndest Things"? (You can watch clips of the show on youtube). This sounds like something from that show: Christianity is the belief that a cosmic Jewish zombie who...

Othello:
  • Electra: Actually race has little to do with what Othello is actually about. Of course it does make an appearance here and there, but it's possible that the race theme has been slightly over-analysed (as is most of Shakespeare's work) by later interpreters. However - it deals with the equally potent themes of jealousy, obsession, paranoia, the idea of masculinity. To me those are the things that makes Othello a truly remarkable account of what is...

World Peace Day

Yesterday was World Peace Day and the BBC was kind enough to run something I wrote for a blogger panel. Thanks to The Benevolent Dictator for recommending me. It was edited for space and I've included a different version here. The best metaphor I have to explain life in Sri Lanka is a country with a really terrible flu. We have this ethnic conflict which - like a virus - has its own logic and

Akon And National Security

This sounds weird. It is weird. Whenever I think Sri Lankan news has reached the pinnacle of oddity it goes one further. So, some people threw stones at a TV station for sponsoring an Akon concert. Among the many places Akon has objectified women dancing (not an issue in itself) they happened to appear for about 3 seconds near a Buddha statue. Hence, the violent response. I went to the press conference today and the

War Speculators

Friedman has a good quote in the Times: "wars... attract all kinds of spectators, meddlers, do-gooders and do-badders. They use the conflict and the attention it generates to play out their own identity issues, passions and biases." Take Arundhati Roy, for example, calling Sri Lanka's war a corporate one in the Times Of India. " All the large Indian companies are now heading to Sri Lanka to make more money," she said, as if

Cost of Conflict

I was poking around Barefoot and I found this interesting (if expensive) report on conflict in Sri Lanka. Specifically, how much the war has cost us. I personally know that the war has been going on my entire lifetime, but it's great to see the raw numbers on troop strength, money spent and lost, people killed, etc. The book covers basically everything you want to know and I was particularily impressed that they'd published the

Anuradhapura, Capital City

I'm on the train back from Anuradhapura. Spoke to a member of the Chamber Of Commerce there, Mr. Amal Piyathilake. Young guy, quite energetic. He said they planned to bring the capital back to Anuradhapura in 2020, in all seriousness. He mentioned one issue they were having there which I thought I'd relate. Apparently, and a few chaps told me this, it's very difficult to get deeds for land. They calculate that the documents have
