Bus Art Estyle

I’ve always been fascinated by the bus art in Sri Lanka. Cerno has documented this pretty well, including a gallery on Flickr. They generally involve some fantastic combination of locations, Eiffel Tower, Temple Of The Tooth, and dragons, for example. I think they are wonderful pieces of imagination, though not quite as art as the old-school painted designs on lorries. Photoshop without aesthetic training is like a monkey with a switchblade. I’ve always wanted to do my own and now that I have a functional monitor I tried one. This is a collage of skylines and images, all fully legit and Creative Commons licensed for this purpose. It is the Sydney Opera House being attacked by a Lego sea monster during a lightning storm over the city of Vancouver/Miami/Hong Kong/Seattle/New York/opolis. The moon has also fallen down. And the whole thing is on top of Niagara Falls.

This is obviously not especially well done or even creative, it was just fun. I think it’s a lovely street estyle. Anyways, these are the sources. Each is better than the final result.

This stuff is all cool for non-commercial derivative works as far as I know, under the liberating Creative Commons licensing system. The Flickr search for that stuff is a lifesaver for doing legit editorial work as well. This is a link to the advanced search I use, with all the relevant boxes checked.

That diet of pure fresh Apple has affected your mind?

Here is a challenge .

Can you actually convince a SL bus to carry your super duper picture ?

Thank you for the mention :D Have almost forgotten about my bus art stuff lately.

Had a brain wave and threw up a quick simulation of what the artwork in this post would look like on the road

Note – its VERY quick and crude

Dominic: Think he’s definitly under the Apple Juice influence – happens a lot with new fruit users specially with some Adobe products mixed in ;)

Ann: :D here’s what it would look like.

Seriously though – you ought to try and sell some ideas to Anura Advertising – from what I recall they seem to do all the graphics on the buses in Colombo.

Dude, That’s awfully awesome. But you can’t even come close to the awfulness of bus art. I’m Sorry. :D

@Dom

I am terrified of this apple zombie juice. It feels like joining a cult

@cerno

that’s hilarious, ‘Indrajith Travals’. One would customary name it after ones kids, though that doesn’t apply to me. I think all of those designs are custom, I think the guy says he likes the Temple Of The Tooth and dragons and the Statue Of Liberty and his kids names are Anusha and Kalpurna and they put that all together.

The Military State Of Mind:
  • jcnars: @rubbish, you hit the coin. Indi seems to have sold his soul of late. Sucking up to the govt. like a pro. @girigor, talking loud doesn't always means talking sense. We are in a period between wars, if: a) nuts like you don't STFU and b) china is allowed a naval base in SL....
  • Girigoris the One: Tamils are being mistreated, Sinhalese should understand blah blah blah Yoy say "But for the sinhalese people, they find it good that the armed forces are around because almost all of them are sinhalese and past experience shows they will favour their own people, sadly." Tell me when the LTTE was around, did they even allow normal Sinhalese peeps to walk in to their area freely? Where were you then? Did you complain to the LTTE why...
  • myil selvan: dear indi, You as a Canadian sinhalese may find it hard to comprehend the nature of militarization. But for the sinhalese people, they find it good that the armed forces are around because almost all of them are sinhalese and past experience shows they will favour their own people, sadly. But for the Tamil people, they see it as an occupying force not interested in their welfare but only in holding real-estate. The coming days, months are...

Have you seen the bit of the old fortifications of Colombo left within the premises of the Commercial Bank building in Fort? Beware of the suspicious security guard there!...
Did Little Children Create God?:
  • Shammi: It's funny the way most of the stories and rituals in the bible have so much in common with legends of more ancient pagan civilizations. Bits of the tales of Gilgamesh, Dionysus et al are mirrored in the descriptioons of Noah, Moses, Jesus, the Holy Trinity and the holy family etc., even a trace of Solomon reflected in Mahoshada of the jataka tales. They could've been a little more creative at least. I think I'm...

  • Kids Say: No, little children didn't create god - insecure and ignorant people did. Believing in and worshipping a magical invisible creature in the sky gives a lot of people comfort and security. That said, little children can be wonderfully creative. Have you seen the show "Kids Say the Darndest Things"? (You can watch clips of the show on youtube). This sounds like something from that show: Christianity is the belief that a cosmic Jewish zombie who...

Othello:
  • Electra: Actually race has little to do with what Othello is actually about. Of course it does make an appearance here and there, but it's possible that the race theme has been slightly over-analysed (as is most of Shakespeare's work) by later interpreters. However - it deals with the equally potent themes of jealousy, obsession, paranoia, the idea of masculinity. To me those are the things that makes Othello a truly remarkable account of what is...

Automating Back Of Bus Montages

In that back of bus sketch I just picked a bunch of cool stuff and tossed it together. Apparently one can (theoretically) automate this. There are some Chinese researchers who seem to be designing a system that takes a sketch of random stuff and turns it into a photo montage. For example, a cheetah chasing a guy on a motorbike across a desert. I would do this manually by searching for things tagged 'cheetah', 'motorbiker'

Internet Monitoring, China Estyle

I suppose it was just a matter of time. The government has begun monitoring and cracking down on Internet speech in earnest. This includes arresting people for Facebook/SMS rumours and shutting down various websites. LankaeNews journalist Prageeth Ekneliyagoda is still missing, after over a week. Various websites have been blocked or shut down and there are reports that a Chinese team has been brought in to help the government monitor stuff. I think the Internet

Hotel Security

Analysts say it's difficult to secure hotels against terrorist attack. In Sri Lanka the formula is pretty simple. Bunch of brown guys with guns. Atmosphere of a military camp. Racial profiling and checkpoints throughout the city. This also sucks, but I suspect a terrorist would have trouble sneaking even a nasty fart into the Hilton. I don't think security is impossible, it's just so crude that it makes life suck. So, our hotels are 'secure',

A Tree Grows In Anuradhapura

Which is over 2,300 years old. Sri Maha Bodhi is a sapling from the Bo tree the Buddha attained enlightenment under. I visited it yesterday with family. The same day, President Mahinda Rajapakse visited and actually got to touch the tree as part of his victory lap around the holy sites. It is a beautiful place and I managed to meditate there for like 20 minutes, through all the chattering families and loudspeakers. Anuradhapura itself
