IDPs Getting Released To Relatives

I hear that the government is going to release IDPs with relatives to take them in (via Daily Mirror). This is a great idea. For one, it’s just, and for two, it’s a lot less work. It’s nice to have the dignity of being able to care for yourself among your own, and it’s also nice for the government to have less mouths to feed. I believe the conditions are that a relative has to vouch for you and be screened themselves. I suppose people have qualms, but that’s a good start. I’ve also been following the Northern Province Government on Twitter and they seem to be proceeding with development. All good news.

oh, this is indeed terrible news.

How will the NGOs and other people who were depending on these camps to ensure their salary live now ?

Govt should be more responsible than this !!!!

Few thousand is far better than none.

Govt commits to resettling ALL IDPs by January 2010. http://www.lbo.lk/fullstory.php?nid=952140202 . If this is to be believed, it is a major step.

This is good, but one is forced to think of a possible flip side in which the government has slowly began retracting from its responsibility of resettlement, perhaps in an attempt at grabbing land as seen in the case of the East.

Really, it’s time Tamils thought outside their ethnicity for a change. Not everything in Sri Lanka is about Tamils. It’s always Tamil this and Tamil that, people stealing “Tamil land”, people hating on the “Tamil culture” and so on and so forth. From hating on Brahmins, North Indians, the Hindi language, Kannadigas, Malayalis to hating on the Singhalese, Muslims, trying to claim Tamil as the oldest language in the universe and the Tamil people as the most ancient, cultured and civilised. Honestly I don’t think I have across any ethnic group as ethnocentric and tribal as the Tamils and I don’t mean that in a racist way. The north and the east does NOT belong to Tamils, just like the rest of Sri Lanka it belongs to ALL SRI LANKANS.

I didn’t say that the North and East belongs to the Tamils, patriotic Whimsical! Guess you need a crash course on the roots of the conflict in Sri Lanka and thanks to people like you, the Tamils will truly be forced only to think of own their ethnicity!…

It’s pretty obvious what you were getting at with the “land grabbing” comment. If you don’t want non-Tamils living in the north and the east then will you kindly get your own Tamil brethren to stop coming to the south of the country? I mean fair is fair right? I have to say this sort of Tamil tribalism isn’t unique to Sri Lanka; I’ve been to India and not one of the ethnic groups I’ve come across in South India is as remotely ethnocentric as the Tamils. Everyone else has given their states non-ethnic names, it’s only Tamil Nadu that is different and when it comes to language chauvinism, well I think even you would know the story. And yes if you want to blame Tamil ethnocentrism on others, go right ahead – it’s always someone else’s fault isn’t it? But I have to ask, when will you stop blaming every tom dick and harry and for a change turn the mirror inwards?

Please stop putting words into my mouth! You really don’t understand the whole issue and truly I don’t have the time to be explaining everything to you from A to Z. Just do some proper reading before you shoot your mouth off and perhaps you can start off by reading our blog. It is also quite ridiculous that you have decided to Tamil-bash me without really knowing who I am and whether I am really a Tamil. The problem with you people is that you are so quick to generalise!
