Art, Photos and Panels Tonight

Among other things, the Colombo Art Biennale starts this week. They’ve converted the warehouse near Park Street Mews to galleries and they’re showing stuff from Jagath Weerasinghe, Alex Stewart, and others, including stuff all around town. Tonight, Thursday it is, Dominic Sansoni is showing a series of photos from Udappu. If you recall, that’s the place with firewalking where I burnt my feet. I got some decent photos just hanging around, but he was right in the middle of the action and has some great ones. I highly recommend it, it’s at Barefoot tonight at 7:30, and I’d assume it starts on time.

I, alas, will be doing a panel discussion on ‘Beyond The Blog’ at the American Center. I dunno if there’s tickets or whatever, can call Sharmini on 772 992 143. It’s basically talking about blogging/new media to a bunch of people from local papers and electronic media.

The Biennale, of course, is ongoing. I recommend checking out all week at Park Street. Not that Park Street, the one near Hyde Park and the Arpico there. Past the Bo tree, across from Union Motors.

The English Speaking Elite:
  • Mahinda: This is sort of a forum, isn't it? What I mean is that Indi posts something, everyone has a quick read, then starts using this space to air their own views and spread their own message or start their own little (quite often completely unrelated) arguments or whatever... Its got an organic quality, which I think is quite nice......
  • The way of the Dodo: I think we should take some of this stuff and create a forum. That allows for better discussion and more mature dialog. What do you guys think...
  • Mahinda: Just curious... Didn't mean to offend....
Much More Mahinda:
  • Mahinda: Lousy, uninteresting comeback with only mild entertainment value. Where's the wit? Where's the logic/justification to the comment? I'm disappointed in you......
  • David Blacker: Mahinda, I doubt you'd make a good bench press, never mind a press sec....
  • Mahinda: Machang Blacker! Where have you been??! Were you busy washing your hair or something? Oh sorry - you don't have hair, no? So why the offensive attitude? Don't you think I'd make a good press sec? ;)...
The Final Cross:
  • Mahinda: Flyovers, if effectively used, are an excellent method of improving the flow of traffic and congestion. Since you guys don't think the ones that have been built work terribly well towards that objective, lets just blame Mahinda and the Government for this and move on :) Ok. That was just a little joke, but on a serious note, I think development should be well thought out and also implemented in the most cost effective manner. Which...
  • Anon: To add to what Dodo say, before the fly-over there was stop-go traffic at the Dehiwala junction. After the flyover there is a continuous, but slow flow of traffic. Although I use that road only rarely in my limited experience the length of the queue and the time taken to travel is no better after the flyover, and may be slightly worse. Moving the bus stand would be an improvement at Dehiwala, think Nugegoda is somewhat more...
  • Anon: Thanks Shammi, there was a very good interview in the Nation a few years back that opened my eyes to him. Think he did a fair job at the port and according to reports did not take a large "grant" that was in the offing. Agree with Dodo that Mangala's chances of getting elected at the moment look pretty slip....

An Ode To Arrack

The timing and sequence of this is a little off, but it's a long weekend. Of course no one is drinking on Poya, but this weekend is also the Kandy Perahera. Whether it's to the memory of Lakshman Kadirgamar, Auntie Florie, or forgetfulness itself, I'm sure many a Sri Lankan will have a tipple. People here seem to love Red Label Scotch, though arrack is another standard. Arrack is a coconut

Sita Sings The Blues (Tonight)

Sita Sings The Blues is one of the best movies I've seen this year. It's screening tonight at Barefoot (7:30), free. It's a cartoon retelling of the Ramayana from Sita's perspective (loosely). Moreso, it's a personal experience of the Ramayana by a talented cartoonist (Nina Paley), using it to understand India, her own failed relationship and life and people in general. More to the point, the songs and humor are amazing and, at times, deeply

After Juliet, Tonight Till Sun

Tracy Holsinger is directing 'After Juliet', a play which starts at the Lionel Wendt tonight. I believe tickets are on sale now at the Wendt and it runs till Sunday. After Juliet is a play written by Kiera Knightley's mother (not that that has anything to do with anything). From what I've read it covers questions like "Do the dead live because an amnesty is called? And if they don't live, can there be peace?"

Punchi Theatre Open Mic Tonight

So, Open Mic is on at Punchi Theatre (Borella, near junc) tonight. It's hard to miss, it literally looks like it was built by termites, near the Lido Cinema. I was stressing the fuck out but things kinda settled. We can hang out in the rehearsal room upstairs. Jan will make some gal arrack tea and pick up some wade from the street in Rajagiriya. You can read or listen or whatever. Dinidu is reading

Solar Backpack, Ships To SL

This is an item I have long coveted. A backpack with solar panels that charges laptops, and they ship to Sri Lanka for $3. Alas, the orange is a bit goday but still thinking about it. Outstation Sri Lanka has spotty electricity. One can function for about a day without falling off the grid, then it's cadging electricity from restaurants and friendly kades. Even then you're never guaranteed the right adapter, or that everything works.
