Anarkalli’s Run

From one of her Facebook pages. I really don’t know what the left munchkin is holding

Anarkalli is a Sri Lankan actress, model and ‘personality’. I saw her first campaign video on Facebook. She’s not the sharpest cookie in the shed, but at least she doesn’t have a history of violence, extortion, rape or corruption. Sadly, this makes her an above average candidate. However, I hear that she’s running her hotel out of the Heritance Hotel in Ahungalla. So, I’m not sure how she A) wins and B) represents a district from a hotel. I also hear that a very competent, hard-working and loyal SLFPer was bumped so Anarkalli could run, and that this is making a bunch of people (rightly) unhappy. More to the point, however, it is simply fun to watch Anarkalli run. She’s not getting in any fights, so it’s all a good show.

I first saw Anarkalli in Ranjan Ramanayake’s One Shot (hilarious YouTube scenes). IMHO, that is the best Sri Lankan film ever made, transcending bad to become somehow sublime. My favorite scene was at the end. One Shot breaks up her wedding and they make off on his motorbike. Then they somehow end up in sand dunes. Then, and this is my favorite part, he she gets off the bike, he goes and kills a Minister, and we never see her again. There also a scene where she passes out and One Shot basically feels her up by way of resuscitation (YouTube above). Great film. So that’s how I know Anarkalli.

More recently, Anarkalli was in the news for a similarly peripheral role in politics. She was dating Duminda Silva, now Provincial Councilor. He’s a rough character who allegedly tried to abduct Anarkalli and her mother from outside a hair salon, among other things. She was also a PR girl for Mangala Samaraweera the fashion designer become Foreign Minister now become outcast. These are qualifications in a Colombo sense, but it doesn’t have that much to do with Galle.

Anakalli doesn’t live in Galle or have family there. National recognition is good, but provincial politics is very much retail. You need to actually sit down with people, listen to their problems, go to Colombo with their files, sort stuff out, come back, etc. It’s hard to do that from a five star hotel. I don’t know how close she is to Mahinda, but I hear she’s close to one of the sons. I guess we’ll see how big their coattails are. I find it hard to be especially offended at Anarkalli. People can vote for her or not. It’s sad, but my basic standard for a politician is not being a common criminal. She’s not, so good luck.

I kind of feel sorry for her… She probably needs help – like in rehabilitation or what ever..

She’s just 22 and I think she became miss Sri Lanka when she was 16 or so (She sure had big boobs for a 16 year old Sri Lankan girl)…, and then moved in to modelling and film industry straight away.. So she probably didn’t get a good education. And judging by the news items; She probably had a troubled personal life so far – got used by politicians and all…

Crazy stuff.

You are right Indi. Those are REALLY good qualifications for a candidate from Colombo.

Seriously? I thought it was the worst and a bit more. LOL.

OK, I think I know what your point is, but expecting her to be a proper councilor is, well, a bit too optimistic. The more apparent and obvious reason why she was given nominations, I think, is because if Mahinda didn’t, Ranil would have. So it’s all just a game.

Frankly, I think this is a load of bull-crap.

What of the SLFP fellow who was ousted.
What’s her platform?
I am 26, lots of tertiary education, but don’t think I would be the least bit competent to compete in elections even if I have a good grasp of the structure and politics of the area where I live. Not saying education is necessary or sufficient for politics! In any case, she’s 22 [would never have guessed -- she looks much older!] and has been in the media spotlight since 16, has she had much time to read books, papers etc amidst all ?

This is a fatalistic comment. I think you would do a much better job of being a politician than her, Indi! Maybe you should run.

How do we solve this problem of lame-ass politicians? I guess countries like India have a much bigger pool to pick from. Nonetheless, we can surely find more qualified candidates!

In any case, Anarkali means “pomegranate blossom” and is linked to an image of a courtesan. Interesting story (see below). Ironic!

ugh wasn’t paying attention and put everything in italics. Apologies!

The fatalistic comment I was referring to “It’s sad, but my basic standard for a politician is not being a common criminal. She’s not, so good luck.”

Judging from he levels of ‘intelligence’ shown by our voters in general, you can be assured she’ll be soon on her way to a parliamentary seat as well

The ‘left munchkin’ is holding a mic.

Could Anarkali run if she did not have ‘connections’ to those you mention in your post?

I find it offensive and insulting for the people. Somehow excusing her just makes it really really lame. We have to get out of this kind of thinking. Lesser of two evils? Can Sri Lankan politics really fall any lower?

On a lighter note, I did love the extract of her talking to Derana – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_Fyp03d0EA :) That was classic.

Sadly, after having a good laugh it struck me that this wasn’t ‘Api nodanna live’ but real stuff in the real world. This woman actually imagines that she understands the people? How can even THINK you can run for an election when paarey bahala, bus ekaka gihilla naththang? 5 start hotel is hilarious.

Lets see how the people vote.

You cant say No to a prince Dr. TKPK Kaluarachchi. I frequent the galle face hotel and often see Anarkalli with her mother. Intrestingly recently Anarkalli was with the young gun Amila Fonseka at the veranda enjoying what seemed an amusing conversation. She was all smiles. Has Amila Fonseka wooed the famous Anarkalli? Or were the Fonsekas discussing their political agenda with Nalin Fonseka opening a Casino at Intercontinetal???

Impressive young man is Amila Fonseka and an uncanning resemblence to his uncle. Lovely chap

any comments left by a Dr. Kaluarachchi were, I believe, fraudulent and not by that person. They’ve been removed.

Mr. Amila Fonseka is a class apart from the usual characters tha roam the lankan clubs. I used to work/manage a popular club back in the day and Mr. Amila Fonseka is one of the favourite and most respected guests.

Respect is earned by money and intimadation in Sri Lanka. Just look at how our latest southern elections fared? and surprise surprise Anarkalli wins a seat. Hilarious state of affairs under a hilarious government and as for Mr. Amila Fonseka beating down hotel owners during the Hikka Musical Festival is not very respectable.

Amila Fonseka is Nalin Fonseka’s nephew. My friend pointed him out to me during Hikka Festival and he looks and acts like the older fonseka. I have seen him in the clubs alot since usually with some model or actress with him.

I don’t know very much about Anarkalli but she must’ve worked to get where she is, so stop hating on a fellow Sri Lankan for achieving something!
As for Amila—great in bed ;) and a sweet and loyal person. It is sad to talk about people you really don’t know. If you are bored, find something productive to do!

2009-12-18 01:48:39

Rekha, it sounds like you are upset because its not you who is on his arm? Do you actually know Mr. Amila? Small deeds go a long way if you must know and please Rekha would you detail your accomplishments or are you just all talk?

2009-12-22 10:47:26

What we should be proud of intimadation and money Dalip Grewal? I agree with Rekha on this one, Amila Fonseka is nothing but a thug who gets off on making life diffcult for the average Sri Lankan? I dont know the dude personally but I saw him once outside Clancys beating up a current minister’s son! As for the models with Amila Fonseka, what can i say? Sad sad sadC

Amila Fonseka is a gorgeous, sexy and confident. I had the pleasure of being introduced to him once and he was very polite. Think most of you all are just jelous of the respect he commands in a club. Obviously Dalip Grewal doesnt sound like he is from Lanka and if Amila Fonseka can convince foreigners that Lanka is a nice place then how bad can he really be??

I knew Amila during his school days. He implemented a Leo’s Club project donating eyes to the cataract victims and I thought that was a good deed and I don’t recall him using his family connections to do anything or even mentioning such a thing

I do not know Amila Fonseka but I have heard great things about him. I also saw him help an elderly lady cross the Galle Road recently and a friend of mine said he saw Amila saving a kitten seconds before it was crushed by a Private Bus. Damn those bus drives, thank god we still have people like Amila Fonseka in our country. A noble gentlemen of such high esteem, we are a blessed nation. Long live Amila Fonseka – the merciful, the courageous…….

Given the recently concluded elections, my guess is Miss. Anarkalli will soon be in the parliament and on Mr. Amila Fonseka I feel most of these claims are unfounded. I have seen him too often at The Clancys Nightclub and not once have I see him act any other way than a gentleman of class. Sorry Rekha but Im calling it as I see it
