Aluth iMac

The cat is not impressed

I finally caved and got a Mac. I love my little netbook but I can barely edit photos and can’t edit video at all. Hence. It’s a bit of a risk, but I got a 24 inch floor model with 2G extra RAM for Rs. 80,000 from EPSI (Majestic City). They say they have a year old MacBook Pro laptop for Rs. 120,000 if anybody wants. These aren’t list prices or anything, I just went in an negotiated. They gave me a free book on income tax that I saw lying around. The risk is no warranty, so if the thing bricks I’ll be hari dukkai. However, I can’t afford a full ticket new one and this model is quite frankly ill as fuck. I have icons bigger than my netbook screen. More to the point, I can edit RAW photo files and HD video without intermittent tea breaks. I think there’s something stuck under the space bar. Besides that everything is OK.

My Other Computer

My current laptop (netbook) is an Advent 4213, brought down from Dixon’s in UK. About Rs.50,000. This is a generic Chinese device with a horrid keyboard and underpowered processor. The reason I use it is cause it (at the time) was one of the few machines with built in 3G. That means I just put my Dialog HSPA SIM in and I have pretty fast Internet all over the country. Colombo, Anuradhapura, Kandy, on the bus, on the train, in a moving car. I always have some type of connectivity with this thing and the battery last for a while. I have to connect to SLT ADSL (WiFi) on this iMac and the netbook is still faster for basic browsing and downloading.

New Computer

This thing I just carried home is not portable at all. It’s rather heavy and it plus the cat takes up pretty much my whole desk. The iMac is cool cause it’s all one piece with one plug. Simple dimple. More to the point however, I can actually see rather than imagine my photographs for once and play back the HD video from my Flip (which gives my netbook seizures). Each tool has it’s place, I think. I still paid less for the two than for any single computer in the past. God willing, nothing will break and I can use this kit for a while.

Have spare Mac bluetooth keyboard. Same as what you have, just without wires. Holler if whatever is stuck under space bar decides to enlarge itself… Actually, also have a spare Macbook Pro from two years ago, spare mice and even Snow Leopard now.

congrats on the purchase! Too bad you couldnt find a deal on the newest iMac, its beautiful. Hope you’re a fan of that mouse, though. Its a pain in the ass imo. Can you get pirated software for macs? like im assuming you’ll be using photoshop/lightroom

An apple for 80k is a good decision. Dont worry. It will not brake. Have you ever heard of broken apples?

Welcome to the Mac side of life!

I’m pretty sure you won’t regret your purchase… I switched to Mac 3 years ago and I haven’t looked back since.

Not sure if the white iMacs have a dual core processor but if they do… you should consider the Rs.3600ish upgrade to Snow Leopard… noticeable improvements in photo editing and the entire machine runs a lot cooler…

The guys at Futureworld are really helpful… even if you didn’t buy your Mac from them… closest thing to a proper Mac store in Colombo.

I’ve used Mac before, starting from the old LCs in school to the first iMac to a G4 at work. I’m fine with Mac, my main issue has always been price for functionality. In this case it’s just so much easier to do video and photo, and it’s cheap

A nice piece of kit Indi, Nice. If you see the new silver i Mac’s out in this part of the world, sick! (intended) :)
Welcome to the world of Mac. Don’t know if you can do it out of Colombo, but do check the Apple Care Protection Plan. You should be able to buy it online.
Your next step must be to procure an i phone, best enjoyed by Apple Mac owners.
