Puttalam

Puttalam is one of the more accessible spots on Sri Lanka’s neglected coast. It was once too near LTTE controlled area for comfort, but now that the country is secured it is comfortable enough. I was out of town for a few days, and mostly out of electricity. It’s a lovely place for that. Stayed at a bungalow near the lagoon, ate seafood from the same and drove around the dry zone looking for a cool spot. At night you can see the Kalpitiya spit on the horizon as seasonal wind blows like an industrial fan.

These are a few photos. Stayed at a friend’s house which they built themselves. It’s basically a roof and some minimal walls to keep the rain out. There’s enough solar power for basic lights and a modern bathroom. But beyond that it’s like you’re living outside, which is how I think a house should be. Lovely place. I think they’re renting it for about 5k a night and you can fit 6-10 people easily.

I recommend both Puttalam and Kalpitiya. They’re quite untouched and quite beautiful, and about four hours away ( I think).

‘Military solution isn’t the option to resolve the conflict in Sri Lanka!’… I still think this is right!
Who said the conflict is over? The hatred within the communities still exists! there are minorities living in fear.
To my knowledge, yes the military solution worked in your advantage to defeat the Tigers militarily….but the minority’s needs aren’t addressed….and assessing the political situation it will never be addressed & this would probably go in cycles.

May be in your perspective, choosing military solution to ………kick thousands of people out of their home & holding them in camps, killing them one by one in terms of eradicating terrorism, oppressing the minorities, occupying in their land, selling the country’s resources to the foreigners, (& yes of course, being able to visit beautiful Puthalam) …is solving the conflict in your country….then yes..you are in the right track!
