Colombo Stirring

Since the war ended I’ve started going out a bit more. Plus inflation is down, so neither I nor my wallet are as likely to blow up. Been hanging out at Park Street Mews (near Hyde Park bo tree, near Arpico). They have decent, affordable food in a cosmopolitan warehouse space. Managed by Harpo, who also does Bayleaf and great pizza, all deliverable via 114.869.000. There’s also a place that delivers box-o-noodles (772.359.135). Haven’t had that. I was at ODEL today and caught a fashion show and I hear above more events coming up.

Otara is quite dedicated to this helping out the street dogs thing which I think is commendable. She launched a clothes line towards that end and all the puppies on the catwalk were available for adoption. I thought initially the show was for dog clothes but it’s for human, with proceeds to help humans. If I could go one day in Colombo without seeing saggy tits/distended uterus/droopy balls and decaying flesh that would be a good day. Till then it is nice to see culture of any sort in Colombo.

As the most recent Culture Vulture (PDF) mentions, stuff happening now includes the Neelan Thiruchelvam Lecture: “Constitutional fairly competent & polite utopias: a conversation with Neelan Thiruchelvam” by Em. Prof. of Law, Upendra Baxi at BMICH, Rm A (FREE). I also hear that Anjali is having another Artwalk fashion show on the 14th, in the warehouse behind Park Street Mews.

Anyways, IMF bailout is on the way, stock market is up 2.5%, here’s to Colombo.

i remember working in colombo when the wellawatte polic station was blown up. the biggest concern was what the traffic would be like. reading indi’s post, one can imagine that now there is no one to blame for the bloody traffic, except for whoever the (in)competent authority is for highway management and traffic patterns. fashion shows in odel and wherever plus delivered noodles aside, i think the bigger story/picture is how all this can help the nation to heal.

how can refugees (who’ve barely had electricity), relate to such events? wouldn’t they feel excluded and foreign when confronted with the vice and excesses of colombo?

i don’t hold it against anyone who loves to have a good time (i am front and center for a good time any old time), but reflection on ones own actions and moderation in everything we do has never been more appropriate than it is now.

I went to ODEL to exchange a shirt and wash my filthy car. I happened to see a fashion show, which incidentally benefited puppies and stray dogs. I mention the noodle thing cause it’s a new small business and I hope they succeed. I personally hope all of these business ventures succeed to create more jobs for Sri Lankans. I went to Park Street today for coffee and I think more people should go. There were like six employees there.

I personally don’t see anything immoderate in buying an occasional shirt and eating food. I personally talk to someone from an IDP camp at least once a week over the phone and tell them when I’m out at Sunday Jazz or Swimming Club and as odd as it seems, they do not seem to begrudge the fact. I do think there is a place for moderation, but I don’t think anyone needs to feel guilty for going out for a coffee or a bite to eat.

The Military State Of Mind:
  • jcnars: @rubbish, you hit the coin. Indi seems to have sold his soul of late. Sucking up to the govt. like a pro. @girigor, talking loud doesn't always means talking sense. We are in a period between wars, if: a) nuts like you don't STFU and b) china is allowed a naval base in SL....
  • Girigoris the One: Tamils are being mistreated, Sinhalese should understand blah blah blah Yoy say "But for the sinhalese people, they find it good that the armed forces are around because almost all of them are sinhalese and past experience shows they will favour their own people, sadly." Tell me when the LTTE was around, did they even allow normal Sinhalese peeps to walk in to their area freely? Where were you then? Did you complain to the LTTE why...
  • myil selvan: dear indi, You as a Canadian sinhalese may find it hard to comprehend the nature of militarization. But for the sinhalese people, they find it good that the armed forces are around because almost all of them are sinhalese and past experience shows they will favour their own people, sadly. But for the Tamil people, they see it as an occupying force not interested in their welfare but only in holding real-estate. The coming days, months are...

Have you seen the bit of the old fortifications of Colombo left within the premises of the Commercial Bank building in Fort? Beware of the suspicious security guard there!...
Did Little Children Create God?:
  • Shammi: It's funny the way most of the stories and rituals in the bible have so much in common with legends of more ancient pagan civilizations. Bits of the tales of Gilgamesh, Dionysus et al are mirrored in the descriptioons of Noah, Moses, Jesus, the Holy Trinity and the holy family etc., even a trace of Solomon reflected in Mahoshada of the jataka tales. They could've been a little more creative at least. I think I'm...
  • Whacko: the question is why we stop asking these questions when we are adults...
  • Kids Say: No, little children didn't create god - insecure and ignorant people did. Believing in and worshipping a magical invisible creature in the sky gives a lot of people comfort and security. That said, little children can be wonderfully creative. Have you seen the show "Kids Say the Darndest Things"? (You can watch clips of the show on youtube). This sounds like something from that show: Christianity is the belief that a cosmic Jewish zombie who...

Othello:
  • Electra: Actually race has little to do with what Othello is actually about. Of course it does make an appearance here and there, but it's possible that the race theme has been slightly over-analysed (as is most of Shakespeare's work) by later interpreters. However - it deals with the equally potent themes of jealousy, obsession, paranoia, the idea of masculinity. To me those are the things that makes Othello a truly remarkable account of what is...

To Colombo 7

OK Pakistan

I was like WTF Pakistan? Link ended up buried on the BBC RD tells me. Then a Pakistani blogger contacted me, addressing me as Dear and Respected. I suspect she does that to all the boys. These bloggers seem quite cool, and they're starting to organize at Pak Spectator. Some of the writing is admittedly stilted, but it's very diverse, very interesting, and very real. I read a post by Naeem which said 'On Tuesday

Perfume

Saw this killer movie, Perfume (download torrent). Heard mixed review but from the beginning it was solid. The first scene is a fetid 17th century fishmarket, the filth on the floor mixed with the blood of a baby just popped. And that's the hero, until you see. The film is about smell and thus the film making is enfused with sensuality - plums, flowers, shit, the maggots stirring inside a rat. Mostly darkness and stank,

A Horse in Downtown Colombo

This is a photo of a horse in downtown Colombo. I don't know what it was doing there. I was walking to the beach from a meeting with Sujan at the Sunday Times. They like the magazine idea - but they're 'thinking' about profit sharing. Which means, er, don't count on it. It was a kinda muggy day in Colombo. I went to the Kollupitiya bus station and looked
