A Textbook Sri Lankan

A government textbook featuring me dressed as Mahinda

Kids have been telling me they saw me in a textbook. I didn’t believe this till a friend sent me a photograph. So my photo is in some government textbook as an illustration of South Asian races. Only thing is that in the particular photo I happen to be dressed as Mahinda Rajapakse. And it’s not actually national dress, it’s a Hameedia’s kurta and a woman’s scarf. It’s funny cause this particular outfit got me banned from the Colombo Rowing Club for life, and the photo is from that night. What are the schools coming to nowadays.

neat . I always thought those text books were boring.

I think they liked your new spin on the national dress.

make it more fun and colorful as opposed to the white ,boring thing.

That is sooo cool.

The English Speaking Elite:
  • Mahinda: This is sort of a forum, isn't it? What I mean is that Indi posts something, everyone has a quick read, then starts using this space to air their own views and spread their own message or start their own little (quite often completely unrelated) arguments or whatever... Its got an organic quality, which I think is quite nice......
  • The way of the Dodo: I think we should take some of this stuff and create a forum. That allows for better discussion and more mature dialog. What do you guys think...
  • Mahinda: Just curious... Didn't mean to offend....
Much More Mahinda:
  • Mahinda: Lousy, uninteresting comeback with only mild entertainment value. Where's the wit? Where's the logic/justification to the comment? I'm disappointed in you......
  • David Blacker: Mahinda, I doubt you'd make a good bench press, never mind a press sec....
  • Mahinda: Machang Blacker! Where have you been??! Were you busy washing your hair or something? Oh sorry - you don't have hair, no? So why the offensive attitude? Don't you think I'd make a good press sec? ;)...
The Final Cross:
  • Mahinda: Flyovers, if effectively used, are an excellent method of improving the flow of traffic and congestion. Since you guys don't think the ones that have been built work terribly well towards that objective, lets just blame Mahinda and the Government for this and move on :) Ok. That was just a little joke, but on a serious note, I think development should be well thought out and also implemented in the most cost effective manner. Which...
  • Anon: To add to what Dodo say, before the fly-over there was stop-go traffic at the Dehiwala junction. After the flyover there is a continuous, but slow flow of traffic. Although I use that road only rarely in my limited experience the length of the queue and the time taken to travel is no better after the flyover, and may be slightly worse. Moving the bus stand would be an improvement at Dehiwala, think Nugegoda is somewhat more...
  • Anon: Thanks Shammi, there was a very good interview in the Nation a few years back that opened my eyes to him. Think he did a fair job at the port and according to reports did not take a large "grant" that was in the offing. Agree with Dodo that Mangala's chances of getting elected at the moment look pretty slip....

Photo Catchers

I was at Acropolis getting some fried something when I saw a catchy magazine on the counter. I looked again and my photo was on the cover of the magazine (Colombo Monthly). I thought this was odd but then they'd credited me on the bottom with a link to my Flick page, in perfect accordance with the Creative Commons license I attached to all my photos. Which made me quite happy. I've seen my photos

Is Truth Treason?

Sarath Fonseka said that the Army executed surrendering LTTE leaders. This is probably true and most people know it's probably true, but there's a huge fuss because he said it out loud. We like the end of war so we deny its brutal means. I understand, but at some point this just becomes pathological. Sarath Fonseka may be a bad politician, but I'm more worried about being a bad human being.

Sri Lankan Blog Advertising

I've been thinking about this for a few weeks and I've got nothing. What's the best way for local Sri Lankan companies to advertise on Sri Lankan blogs? Is it Google Adsense, or is it some local, custom-built solution. Adsense has the advantage of being an awesome, mature system, and it can target a list of blogs exclusively. However, I'm not sure that it A) connects to Sri Lankan banks B) can give money to

Best Cameras Of The Season

I recently bricked my camera and just got a new one down from Singapore. What follows is what I think are the best compact cameras on the market this season. My priorities are low-light and some degree of manual control. The thing also needs to fit in my pocket, including rather tight jeans. What I decided on was the Canon S90, but there are other worthy options. The S90 has great manual control and is
