Toy Drive For Northern Hospitals

A billboard in Vavuniya. Life can be better than this

The second ACT delivery of goods should go up this Saturday the 16th. This is supplying Vavuniya and Padaviya Hospitals. I’ll try to go with to Padaviya. One component of this is a toy drive. This is personally important to me cause the knowledge that the South cares can make a big difference in a child’s life. Personally, I still remember and have toys that people gave me when I was a child. Medical goods will sustain their lives, but something has to sustain their hopes as well.

Furthermore, this can never happen again. We have to reach out to the children to stop this generational cycle of violence and hate. I’m not saying a toy will do that, but I the first time I saw the kids at Lady Ridgeway smile was when they opened their coloring books.

This is the message from Annika, you can read more here.

Thanks man fr keeping this going.

Hey I do have a bit of news.

Yesterday I read your post on your moms organizationand then was reading a book by Rob Kling and guess what !!!!!!
Right at the end of the book in an appendix appears the name “rohan samarajiva” and I just had to grin. this was about a social informatics workshop attended by him in 1997 , the only sri lankan. What are the odds ? 2:am in the morning, I am at a library reading a book wth a mention of thee father and on the same day you have blogged about your mother !!!!.

ok, after I worte all that it does not sound so cool but at the time it was sooooo cooool.
Just take my word. may be I was wayy too high on caffeine. but so neat neat that our pop met Rob Kling. Legend !!!

My last few comments have been rather negative, so I should say: Thank you for doing this, and for trying to make things better for the people in the camps as best you can. Things should never have been allowed to come to this pass, but they have, and I appreciate the fact that you’re trying to do things for my people.

If there’re enough people on the island who’d sooner occupy themselves with that than with celebrating their “glorious victory”, there’s still the possibility of hope.

The English Speaking Elite:
  • Mahinda: This is sort of a forum, isn't it? What I mean is that Indi posts something, everyone has a quick read, then starts using this space to air their own views and spread their own message or start their own little (quite often completely unrelated) arguments or whatever... Its got an organic quality, which I think is quite nice......
  • The way of the Dodo: I think we should take some of this stuff and create a forum. That allows for better discussion and more mature dialog. What do you guys think...
  • Mahinda: Just curious... Didn't mean to offend....
Much More Mahinda:
  • Mahinda: Lousy, uninteresting comeback with only mild entertainment value. Where's the wit? Where's the logic/justification to the comment? I'm disappointed in you......
  • David Blacker: Mahinda, I doubt you'd make a good bench press, never mind a press sec....
  • Mahinda: Machang Blacker! Where have you been??! Were you busy washing your hair or something? Oh sorry - you don't have hair, no? So why the offensive attitude? Don't you think I'd make a good press sec? ;)...
The Final Cross:
  • Mahinda: Flyovers, if effectively used, are an excellent method of improving the flow of traffic and congestion. Since you guys don't think the ones that have been built work terribly well towards that objective, lets just blame Mahinda and the Government for this and move on :) Ok. That was just a little joke, but on a serious note, I think development should be well thought out and also implemented in the most cost effective manner. Which...
  • Anon: To add to what Dodo say, before the fly-over there was stop-go traffic at the Dehiwala junction. After the flyover there is a continuous, but slow flow of traffic. Although I use that road only rarely in my limited experience the length of the queue and the time taken to travel is no better after the flyover, and may be slightly worse. Moving the bus stand would be an improvement at Dehiwala, think Nugegoda is somewhat more...
  • Anon: Thanks Shammi, there was a very good interview in the Nation a few years back that opened my eyes to him. Think he did a fair job at the port and according to reports did not take a large "grant" that was in the offing. Agree with Dodo that Mangala's chances of getting elected at the moment look pretty slip....

Northern Relief Delivered

This is a video report of a trip ACT Lanka took to Padaviya. This time there were two convoys, one to Vavuniya, one to Padaviya. From the warzone casualties go/went to Palmudai via boat. From there they travel to the transit hospital and Padaviya for urgent care. Then they are sent to bigger hospitals in cities like Vavuniya. This video shows the goods being loaded, offloaded, inventoried, and some token toys being immediately distributed. This

About The Muslim IDPs

Muslim IDPs have largely been forgotten. When the LTTE tried to ethnically cleanse the north they marched Muslims out of their homes with little notice. This was twenty years ago, and they still have not been able to resettle in their homes. Tamil IDPs of the most recent phase of war have gotten the most attention, but the older Muslim IDPs have not. Another forgotten group is those displaced and now in India. I think the

IDPs Getting Released To Relatives

I hear that the government is going to release IDPs with relatives to take them in (via Daily Mirror). This is a great idea. For one, it's just, and for two, it's a lot less work. It's nice to have the dignity of being able to care for yourself among your own, and it's also nice for the government to have less mouths to feed. I believe the conditions are that a relative has to

The Impossibility Of Being

I can't find my way around anymore. At least not consciously. With all the one way streets and detours its difficult to plot a mental path from A to B. I just sorta drive in the general direction and rely on muscle memory to get there. There are various jetstreams coursing through Colombo and - in lieu of understanding them - I just drive. The traffic flow has its benefits I guess, but creating a

Jaffna Eclipse Soon

A brief solar eclipse will pass through Jaffna this Friday. Taking the bus up there to check it out. Jaffna is the new destination, full of political candidates and all and sundry. I have never been and for much of my life considered it off limits. This is a place with LTTE memorials, where last election the LTTE forced a boycott. But now the road is open and, god willing, Jaffna can take its place
