For Women In Power, Today

From Lasantha’s funeral

Amma is working on something called lankawomen.net. It’s a grassroots organization to encourage and support women in government. This is good for its own sake, but I think it also leads to better governance. I know many women out of power who still have it and get stuff done. This organization is cool cause it’s starting from the local government level. They’re meeting today, to quote, ‘There will be a meeting on May 12, Tuesday at 3:30 to assess the current legislative situation regarding women’s  representation in politics and to plan for a lobbying effort. Please contact lankawomen.net at 011-497-9795 or email coord@lankawomen.net to participate.’

Agenda:

(1) Assess current developments in legislation (Sudantha Liyanage, participant, parliamentary committee on election reform)

(2) Submissions made by Mothers and Daughters of Lanka (Nimalka Fernando, Coordinator, MDL); see http://www.womenandmedia.net/Politics/B-ElectoralReformMay2004.pdf

(3) Discussion on current needs (led by several women councillors from municipal/urban/pradeshiya sabha councils)

(4) Media presence

Look forward to your participation.

If you’re a women or just want better governance I’d recommend checking it out, or just commenting.

The English Speaking Elite:
  • shammi: Oh? But there was never any need for you to guess was there? Besides, I've already mentioned my kids on this blog a couple of times. Sorry you weren't tuned in....
  • Mahinda: :) Oh you're already a mommy, eh? Would never have guessed!...
  • shammi: And then there was this awful, evil wizard ...... Don't mind him Dodo, He's just jealous 'cos he could never think up such a sweet gesture. You may send me any number of cute trollcats. And Mahinda, I'm already telling my kids a different story....
The Final Cross:
  • shammi: They must have abandoned the original plan for fear of not being able to muster enough support. Most people wouldn't fancy a beating up by the riot police and a night out in the cooler. So it was just a protest by a few opposition UNP MPs dressed in black, sitting outside the parliament somewhere. The few who are left, that is. Tragic!...
  • The way of the Dodo: No I live in Sri Lanka. I just haven't heard of the black day rally outside of the black july one...
  • shammi: Oh! you're probably not based here. The forces opposing the amendment had planned to call a general strike and urged people to dress in black on 8th Sep. as a sign of protest. Not sure whether it's still on, 'cos there's talk of a fast unto death by someone near the parliament today, : ) Yeah, another one of those!...
Much More Mahinda:
  • The way of the Dodo: really!...
  • Colombian: Anyone else is going to the 'Black day' rally?? I was promised a pack of chicken fried rice and a bottle of old arrack....
  • Mahinda: Is that what's happening, rookie? Ok then. Hey listen, if you want to improve on that big L on your forehead, I know this really good tattoo guy that does good work. I'm not sure he's ever done a forehead before, but I'll ask him for you. Now enough of the banter. While I'm enjoying it, I can't imagine too many of the other people visiting this blog will appreciate our little exchanges so much. So...

Fair Love

Does sex need to be regulated? Yes. I think society and government should regulate marriage, contraception, abortion, prostitution, etc. The problem is that men in power tend to regulate women and behave like dicks. I think sexual regulation is important, but it's only fair if women also get to decide. We need many more women in power. When power and sexuality are imbalanced, people get fucked.

The Faux Feminism of Hillary Clinton

Wives/Daughters of rulers have been elected for years all over the world. In 60 year old Sri Lanka it's already happened twice. Today the President is a former first lady, and the power of dynasty is so strong that even the Italian wife of Rajiv Gandhi is the leader of India's Congress party. Add the late Benazir Bhutto and Khaleda Zia and Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh and the whole subcontinent has been ruled by Queen

Damn You Brain, Failed Me Again

Uh, this is just for future reference. I'm screwing myself over here, but might as well get some information out of the deal. Men are always thinking about sex. If you meet a nice respectable guy he's just repressing it better than anyone else. I think 90% of male brain power is simply devoted to getting our genes to shut the fuck up. If you're lazy you come off as

The State Of The Modern Woman

Dynastic prime ministers aside, Sri Lanka is a tough place for women. Men will literally masturbate next to you on the bus and other passengers will say you were asking for it. Any night at a club is an invitation to get groped, and any walk down the street makes you a streetwalker. As law and order breaks down further in Colombo, nights out are even more unsafe for women. They are less in numbers,
