Emergency Open Mic Tomorrow

Bit of short notice, but this might be a good time for an Open Mic. We’ll have one tomorrow in Rajagiriya, down Obeysekerapura. That’s Thursday, May 21st, tomorrow at 8 PM. No notice, but things are going crazy and we might as well get together to digest what’s going on. I got a shitload of stories from IDP camps, hospitals and jail that I can’t publish so I can share those. If you have poetry or stories or music or just something to say, do come out. Jan’s house, Obeysekerapura, Rajagiriya. Near the McDo roundabout.

If you’re unfamiliar with Open Mic, we just show up at someone’s house and people can read anything they’ve written or read. Or sing or dance or whatever. It’s one space for free expression if you care to exercise it. I’ll call the usual suspects tomorrow and get them to come.

It’s at Tim’s old house at the end of Obeysekerapura. If you know the Rajagiriya McDonald’s, it’s near that roundabout. If you’re coming from Colombo you can either go down Parliament Rd at that Ayurevada roundabout or left into Rajagiriya. Take the left way into Rajagiriya and then Obeysekerapura is the first big road on your left. There’s a visible sign.

Go down almost to the end of the road. It’s a bit of a ghetto neighborhood so don’t hit anybody. Near the very end as you start to climb the hill there’s a bunch of Daffy Ducks and Mickey Mouses painted on a wall at the left. That’s the place.

These are the hosts directions:

217, obesekarapura, moragasmulla road, rajagiriya…come down the old rajagiriya road..pass the aryuvedah hospital, turn into obesekarapura on your left…come down on this road for about 1 km…continue streight up the hill after the “new kolonawa junction”,its the first house on the left…dirty white wall, green gate with a red flash-sticker on it.

Please park inside the garden or on the RIGHT side of the street !

I’ll post a map and stuff if you find it insanely confusing.

So that’s Open Mic, tomorrow at 8. Short notice, but there’s a lot going on.

The English Speaking Elite:
  • shammi: Oh? But there was never any need for you to guess was there? Besides, I've already mentioned my kids on this blog a couple of times. Sorry you weren't tuned in....
  • Mahinda: :) Oh you're already a mommy, eh? Would never have guessed!...
  • shammi: And then there was this awful, evil wizard ...... Don't mind him Dodo, He's just jealous 'cos he could never think up such a sweet gesture. You may send me any number of cute trollcats. And Mahinda, I'm already telling my kids a different story....
The Final Cross:
  • shammi: They must have abandoned the original plan for fear of not being able to muster enough support. Most people wouldn't fancy a beating up by the riot police and a night out in the cooler. So it was just a protest by a few opposition UNP MPs dressed in black, sitting outside the parliament somewhere. The few who are left, that is. Tragic!...
  • The way of the Dodo: No I live in Sri Lanka. I just haven't heard of the black day rally outside of the black july one...
  • shammi: Oh! you're probably not based here. The forces opposing the amendment had planned to call a general strike and urged people to dress in black on 8th Sep. as a sign of protest. Not sure whether it's still on, 'cos there's talk of a fast unto death by someone near the parliament today, : ) Yeah, another one of those!...
Much More Mahinda:
  • The way of the Dodo: really!...
  • Colombian: Anyone else is going to the 'Black day' rally?? I was promised a pack of chicken fried rice and a bottle of old arrack....
  • Mahinda: Is that what's happening, rookie? Ok then. Hey listen, if you want to improve on that big L on your forehead, I know this really good tattoo guy that does good work. I'm not sure he's ever done a forehead before, but I'll ask him for you. Now enough of the banter. While I'm enjoying it, I can't imagine too many of the other people visiting this blog will appreciate our little exchanges so much. So...

Open Mic Tomorrow After Yonks

Will have another Open Mic tomorrow in the warehouse behind Park Street Mews. It's where they had Artwalk and the Colombo Art Biennale. This is after literally months because I'm lazy and terrified of real-world activity. St. Fallen, however, has gotten me off my ass and the Park Street people have been kind enough to proffer the space. Inshallah, we could continue it there. That is becoming a happening part of town (relatively, much to

Working at Sarvodaya

I think my last email was a little sad. Now I feel more hopeful. The site has done well, and helped people, I hope. Apple and Google have given Sarvodaya space on their front pages along with the big charities like Red Cross, OxFam, etc It's the only Asian NGO to be featured on both. I don't think that has much to do with the site but rather the fact

Democracy Is A Practice

I called myself a Buddhist for most of my life, but I never really understood it until I meditated. In the same way I'm beginning to believe that I can't really call myself a citizen unless I practice democracy. So that means speaking out more, be it in writing or in voice. It means paying attention to elections, even local ones, and voting. It also involves writing letters and meeting people and standing on the
