Nibras Bawa

A wordle of today’s Kottu

Wow. I’ve been trying to devote time to sending relief up the warzone and I didn’t realize that the blogosphere had become one. This fellow Nibras Bawa is publishing bloggers names and addresses. This is a violation of Kottu policy so I kicked him off that, with the option to return if he stopped. But he hasn’t. So, Mr. Bawa, if you want to out anybody out me. My name is Indi Samarajiva and I’m not hard to find.

Bloggers have the right to be anonymous, in my opinion, because it’s their damn business and because in Sri Lanka writers lives are actually in danger. People also have families and co-workers and if they want to keep their creative/writing life separate from that it’s their business.

I am a named blogger and people have said all kinds of stuff about me and I don’t care. I remember someone made fun of a photo when I had a zit like 6 years ago and I freaked out and paced around worrying about it. But over time I grew up. People ask me if I know who Sitting Nut and Padashow are and I don’t care. Over time people tell me names but I never ask and I try not to listen. I certainly would never publicly out someone, no matter what they say about me.

I trust that I can win or at least exist based on the strength of my words and who I am. And because I think my parents gave me some basic character and manners.

Nibras Bawa, however, is a coward. Rather than standing on the strength of his words he chooses to publish peoples names and addresses, threaten them, cry to Johnny Law, leave comments using their kids names, etc.

He is a named person so I’ll address him as such. I think Nibras Bawa is a coward and borderline sociopath. He does not seem to know how to engage with people in a respectful and gentlemanly manner. He also threatens peoples jobs and families and both slanders and libels them.

And for no good reason. I’ve been attacked by people much more viciously than he ever has, and yet I retain my good name. Not by virtue of what people say about me, but by my own actions.

If you’re Googling this, I don’t recommend Nibras Bawa for any job or social interaction. He does not play well with others. I don’t know him personally, but I can say based on his conduct online that he is not a gentlemen and unless he reforms he’s not a part of the Kottu community.

If anyone else thinks that outing a blogger is somehow a good response, it’s not. It’s just cowardly and belies weakness of argument and thought. Anyone who does so will be removed from Kottu. The right to be anonymous is one of the few things mentioned in the Kottu terms, under the libel part. I don’t care if you fight, but there is honor among bloggers.

Argh, update. OK, now this Passionately Patient blogger has also jumped on the bandwagon and listed names and phone numbers. What is the point of this? People get back to me saying ‘oh, they insulted me first.’ Eh? I don’t care.

Such is life, people will be mean in the blogosphere. Believe me, I know. The way to preserve your good name is not by flaming out, it’s by calming down and being yourself. The measure of your character is not what other people say about you, it’s the way you react.

Bawa and Passionately Patient have shown a lack of character so far, but I hope that they can reform and be change. But let me be clear, anyone outing another blogger is off Kottu immediately.

Ah, I find it difficult to read through the ALL CAPS, but I get the impression that you’re threatening me.

Like I said, come see me. Send your lawyers or whatever. My name is Indi Samarajiva. I live mainly in my car but I’m usually in Colombo. You can do whatever you want on the Internet, I don’t care.

Also, anyone on the Internet can see what an immature, petty and vindictive person you seem to be. People have asked me if we should contact your employer, your mother, all this stuff. I say no to that even though I don’t like you. And I think that’s the difference between you and me. I think the measure of a man is how he treats his enemies or people he doesn’t like. It’s easy to treat people you like with respect, but dealing with people you disagree with is character. By that measure you come up far short.

I’m not saying you can say this or that, but if you have a problem with any blogger on Kottu you have a problem with me now. I have been here for a while, I’ve been in my share of blog fights and I’m here and most of them aren’t. I’ve seen much more fucked up stuff since then so I honestly can’t take your petty issues that seriously, but I’m quite willing to defend any blogger you bully.

So, for the decent people out there, if Bawa causes any trouble please contact me. You don’t really need to waste your time.

Yes The actions of a few people made me feel sad. I was wondering if we cannot get along among few thousands (or hundreds) bloggers, how is this country going to get along in the future. It just sad to imagine. I may be a just too romantic. But these drain my energy. It is very hard for me to mouth or write four letter words but my mind says it aloud when confronting these.
I read a quite a few blogs, some daily, and mostly I end up smiling, envying those photos of nice places or genuinely saddened by the plight of Sri Lankans (war, politics etc) Then I see these type of moronic acts, I do not even feel like blogging. I just read a few blogs and instead of writing a post and end up calling my Grand Ma, my only real link to SL. I always liked Kottu and it is my starting point for daily SL browsing. Thank you for Kottu and it’s standards!

you know its surprising for a chap with so much apparent education such as Nibas Bawa to let his online profile get ruined like this. Maybe sense is harder to come by than education. I mean just google his name and all you get is stuff putting him down. being open and out there is one thing, but Mr. Bawa seems to have fed himself a sour meal here..Unless this is an impostor trying to sully the name of the real NIbras Bawa.. like the Real Slim Shady.

Glad you offed the second offender as well.
I do not know these people but I think every one has a right to their anonymity,
and every person should respect that. Kottu has been around for years and this
has NEVER happened until now, correct?
Honestly, I don’t get all this nastiness. It’s petty and disgusting.

Indi, for one I think this whole NB, RD, PP, Jade and TMS and what not saga is blown out of proportion… by ourselves. It’s US that gave undue attention to all this, instead of ignoring which would have been the best thing we could have done – well at least that’s what I did.

I agree that revealing identity of another person is unacceptable. I myself blog under my real name, but I can also understand if someone chose to do otherwise.

So I guess the best thing would be to put all this behind us and move on.

OK. Seems that Passionately Patient was suspended from WordPress for a violation of their Terms Of Service. I found out cause I was about to report it myself. Basically the relevant section is:

the Content is not libelous or defamatory (more info on what that means), does not contain threats or incite violence towards individuals or entities, and does not violate the privacy or publicity rights of any third party

Good on whoever reported it. Now looking into the Blogger TOS

My 2 cents on this whole fiasco. The blogosphere in Sri Lanka is a fragile community, one that can easily be shaken up by one retarded post. It appears that, this storm would have gone away, if people hadn’t added fuel to the fire. If your personally sick and tired off attacking each other or being the victim. Why not just ignore it? Why are you guys making it even worse by dishing out personal attacks on each other, when in reality its of no interest to anyone? Sure it was engaging to read, the first couple of times. Now its bordering on a new level of lunacy. Your only real solution is to just forget the whole damned thing, and continue writing as you did before, about things that are generally of interest to people who read your blogs regularly. Not this crap!

Good God, what a bunch of juveniles. If you can’t take the criticism, don’t write where your work is accesible to the public. Part of the idea of blogs is to expose your writing and when you do, it will be criticised. Not everyone likes everything that goes up and people love to voice their opinions. Get a life, the whole world is going down right now with the economic crisis, Sri Lanka itself is in great trouble, I don’t just mean the war but the empty treasury too…focus on those things. Get off your ego trips and get a life.

On Kottu’s Security

Ok, er, wow. Now Nibras Bawa is sending out mails threatening to hack Kottu. Is it possible to break Kottu? Yes, I do it all the time. However, it's simply impossible to destroy peoples content as Bawa claims. Kottu is an aggregator. It doesn't host any content at all. Sri Lanka's government is way too big to ever get smaller. The worst example is the Jumbo Cabinet, which will be politically impossible to shrink. The only solution is to make the Cabinet bigger.
