Open Mic at Punchi Theatre

So, we can have another Open Mic this Thursday (the 5th) at the Punchi Theatre rehearsal room. Has to be 8:30 because there’s a Latin dancing class before. If you’re familiar with the Punchi (Borella), the room we’re in is directly up the stairs to your left. Note that this is not the main theatre, it’s the room upstairs. It’s not a bar but there might be a bucket of something if you come on time. I had a great arrack tea this weekend that left me asleep on some man’s lap, maybe that. Note that this is turning into more of a salon (gathering to educate and entertain each other) rather than a performance. I’ve included a few videos from the last one. You can click through.

So, time is 8:30 on Thursday March 5th. Place is Punchi Theatre, Borella. It is that place which looks like some sort of hobbit-hole/termite-farm just past Borella junction. You can park on a few streets nearby, I think including the road just before. We’re not in the theatre itself, but rather the rehearsal room upstairs, which is pretty big and has a balcony. Again, if things start late or the mic doesn’t work or there’s no chairs or you have to pee or something I’m fucking sorry. Please consider this more of a meeting than a performance. And more of a gathering than a meeting. And please try to enjoy the entropy.

If you’re not familiar, this is a space for Colombo creative types to read poetry, prose, comedy stuff they’ve been working on, or that they like. It can be political or not, though the most entertaining stuff generally isn’t. It’s called Open Mic but have a word with me or Tracy or J so someone can introduce you. I think a good time is between 2-3 minutes, maybe 5. A couple very good things have gone on longer. We have enough confirmed content to fill some amount of time, but the surprise stuff has been surprisingly good.

Also, I don’t know if this is possible, but I met someone who’s helping out people in the IDP camps. They need any number of things, but something they’re trying to collect is padurus. Whatsit, mats. Thing is that when they give to a camp they give everything at once (cause jealousy’s bigger than a state in Russia). And the, uh, thing is that means that we need like 3,000 padurus for one particular camp. Which is impossible, but I dunno, perhaps we could get, like, a hundred to start. I don’t know if this is a good idea or not, for people to bring padurus to this Open Mic, tell me. Or maybe money. I think both the IDPs and the troops are cause worth supporting, but I dunno how much support there is to give.

Oh you met someone, what at a concentration camp??? Oh and those stupid pesky Tamil refugees demanding that they all get mats at the same time. Tsk, tsk, see that’s why they need to be exterminated.

And why would these desperate people turn to you for their mats. What because they read your blog?

Lol, the game is so up Indi. Get a life. You have no power whatsoever to help anyone, most especially yourself and certainly not “someone”.

I’ll be there hopefully. I am not the public performance type so I’ll sit back and listen.

XYZ: Get a life? Hilarious coming from a man/woman who assumes a pseudonym to insult someone online.

Why Does India Suck At The Olympics?

Today on the morning show we talked about the Olympics, namely China’s emerging dominance. For me the bigger question is India. Why does India suck so much? In 2008 the US won 110 medals, China won 100 and India won… 3. India has over a billion people, some economic clout and is by all counts an emerging superpower, but they suck at the Olympics. Why?

New New Kottu

Janith has updated Kottu with rims and shit. Seriously, it looks pretty good. You could say the desktop look is cosmetic, but check out the mobile. Kottu now looks like an app with settings and menus and such. The biggest problem with K2 is me, ie, it now takes me up to a month to respond to emails. OMG I’m scared of my email. But Janith’s done this code and design update all by himself and it looks pretty good. Check it out. There was one bug with the previous page link. Lettuce know if there’s any more.

Miss Travel. Alternately, Mistravel

This is highly dubious. Miss Travel is a travel/social networking site that connects ‘Generous’ and ‘Attractive’ travelers. To, like, travel together, I guess. It all seems a bit like arranged prostitution and trafficking. This is part of a broader online trend to connect rich men to younger, attractive women. Sites like seekingarrangement.com connects women to ‘sugar daddies’ already. I guess Miss Travel is just taking that trend international. Wait, I checked, it’s the same guy doing both.

Buying Appliances Online (Singer)

Sri Lankan domestics never say anything, they just stop coming. My maid just stopped coming and when I finally pressed her she said I needed to get a washing machine. I was hoping to ride this one out, but I’ve run out of underwear and I have no choice. I finally caved and bought a washing machine, from Singer, ONLINE. I put the online in all caps because it’s pretty awesome. I ordered the thing in like 15 minutes on Saturday and they just delivered it today. It’s pretty awesome, this brave new world.
