Open Mic at Punchi Theatre

So, we can have another Open Mic this Thursday (the 5th) at the Punchi Theatre rehearsal room. Has to be 8:30 because there’s a Latin dancing class before. If you’re familiar with the Punchi (Borella), the room we’re in is directly up the stairs to your left. Note that this is not the main theatre, it’s the room upstairs. It’s not a bar but there might be a bucket of something if you come on time. I had a great arrack tea this weekend that left me asleep on some man’s lap, maybe that. Note that this is turning into more of a salon (gathering to educate and entertain each other) rather than a performance. I’ve included a few videos from the last one. You can click through.

So, time is 8:30 on Thursday March 5th. Place is Punchi Theatre, Borella. It is that place which looks like some sort of hobbit-hole/termite-farm just past Borella junction. You can park on a few streets nearby, I think including the road just before. We’re not in the theatre itself, but rather the rehearsal room upstairs, which is pretty big and has a balcony. Again, if things start late or the mic doesn’t work or there’s no chairs or you have to pee or something I’m fucking sorry. Please consider this more of a meeting than a performance. And more of a gathering than a meeting. And please try to enjoy the entropy.

If you’re not familiar, this is a space for Colombo creative types to read poetry, prose, comedy stuff they’ve been working on, or that they like. It can be political or not, though the most entertaining stuff generally isn’t. It’s called Open Mic but have a word with me or Tracy or J so someone can introduce you. I think a good time is between 2-3 minutes, maybe 5. A couple very good things have gone on longer. We have enough confirmed content to fill some amount of time, but the surprise stuff has been surprisingly good.

Also, I don’t know if this is possible, but I met someone who’s helping out people in the IDP camps. They need any number of things, but something they’re trying to collect is padurus. Whatsit, mats. Thing is that when they give to a camp they give everything at once (cause jealousy’s bigger than a state in Russia). And the, uh, thing is that means that we need like 3,000 padurus for one particular camp. Which is impossible, but I dunno, perhaps we could get, like, a hundred to start. I don’t know if this is a good idea or not, for people to bring padurus to this Open Mic, tell me. Or maybe money. I think both the IDPs and the troops are cause worth supporting, but I dunno how much support there is to give.

Oh you met someone, what at a concentration camp??? Oh and those stupid pesky Tamil refugees demanding that they all get mats at the same time. Tsk, tsk, see that’s why they need to be exterminated.

And why would these desperate people turn to you for their mats. What because they read your blog?

Lol, the game is so up Indi. Get a life. You have no power whatsoever to help anyone, most especially yourself and certainly not “someone”.

I’ll be there hopefully. I am not the public performance type so I’ll sit back and listen.

XYZ: Get a life? Hilarious coming from a man/woman who assumes a pseudonym to insult someone online.

The Military State Of Mind:
  • jcnars: @rubbish, you hit the coin. Indi seems to have sold his soul of late. Sucking up to the govt. like a pro. @girigor, talking loud doesn't always means talking sense. We are in a period between wars, if: a) nuts like you don't STFU and b) china is allowed a naval base in SL....
  • Girigoris the One: Tamils are being mistreated, Sinhalese should understand blah blah blah Yoy say "But for the sinhalese people, they find it good that the armed forces are around because almost all of them are sinhalese and past experience shows they will favour their own people, sadly." Tell me when the LTTE was around, did they even allow normal Sinhalese peeps to walk in to their area freely? Where were you then? Did you complain to the LTTE why...
  • myil selvan: dear indi, You as a Canadian sinhalese may find it hard to comprehend the nature of militarization. But for the sinhalese people, they find it good that the armed forces are around because almost all of them are sinhalese and past experience shows they will favour their own people, sadly. But for the Tamil people, they see it as an occupying force not interested in their welfare but only in holding real-estate. The coming days, months are...

Have you seen the bit of the old fortifications of Colombo left within the premises of the Commercial Bank building in Fort? Beware of the suspicious security guard there!...
Did Little Children Create God?:
  • Shammi: It's funny the way most of the stories and rituals in the bible have so much in common with legends of more ancient pagan civilizations. Bits of the tales of Gilgamesh, Dionysus et al are mirrored in the descriptioons of Noah, Moses, Jesus, the Holy Trinity and the holy family etc., even a trace of Solomon reflected in Mahoshada of the jataka tales. They could've been a little more creative at least. I think I'm...
  • Whacko: the question is why we stop asking these questions when we are adults...
  • Kids Say: No, little children didn't create god - insecure and ignorant people did. Believing in and worshipping a magical invisible creature in the sky gives a lot of people comfort and security. That said, little children can be wonderfully creative. Have you seen the show "Kids Say the Darndest Things"? (You can watch clips of the show on youtube). This sounds like something from that show: Christianity is the belief that a cosmic Jewish zombie who...

Othello:
  • Electra: Actually race has little to do with what Othello is actually about. Of course it does make an appearance here and there, but it's possible that the race theme has been slightly over-analysed (as is most of Shakespeare's work) by later interpreters. However - it deals with the equally potent themes of jealousy, obsession, paranoia, the idea of masculinity. To me those are the things that makes Othello a truly remarkable account of what is...

Punchi Theatre Open Mic Tonight

So, Open Mic is on at Punchi Theatre (Borella, near junc) tonight. It's hard to miss, it literally looks like it was built by termites, near the Lido Cinema. I was stressing the fuck out but things kinda settled. We can hang out in the rehearsal room upstairs. Jan will make some gal arrack tea and pick up some wade from the street in Rajagiriya. You can read or listen or whatever. Dinidu is reading

Borella Open Mic – Tomo

FYI, we're having another Open Mic this Thursday at 8. Should have some music from Wagon Park and some poems and prose, as well as whatever anyone feels like reading. This is at a friends house (not Punchi Theatre), but just look out for a Sign Of The Gorrilla, before the Borella post office. That should lead you to the relevant house. If anyone's new or wondering what's the point, there's a lot more to

Buddhi Singing, Punchi Open Mic

This one wasn't magic, till the very end. The thing about open mics is that they can be boring, but then you get stuff that really surprises you. This time, at the very end of the night - when many people had left and I really had to pee - this fellow came and started tuning his guitar. His name's Buddhi and he's from a Moratuwa-based band called Wagon Park. He sang in Sinhala and

Zombie Apocalypse

This is a poem about the imminent zombie apocalypse. Pending that, it looks like the Open Mic will be at the Punchi Theatre (up upstairs, udah udah rehearsal room) next Thursday. It's booked but I'll check on sound and stuff today. This is not an announcement. I was apologizing to someone about stairs and the parking and drinking out of buckets and stuff but he was like, 'I'm OK with the side of the road'.

Baby Pictures Are Always Good

Tha was in Dubai and he got me the Dimage camera I was looking for, so I guess this will be the first pictures I post. I think Senuri took the first one. Today I worked on some documents and went to Punchi Amma's. They just bought a computer and I showed her how to use some stuff, some basic stuff on Excel for now. Anouka came in and mashed up
