Politics

An (optimized) caricature of Burke

Read some Burke on Facebook (via Naz). Which is a rarity, LOL. “All government, indeed every human benefit and enjoyment, every virtue, and every prudent act, is founded on compromise and barter.” Politics. Which I understand as politics. Looked up ‘politics’ on Wikipedia (the Wiki being the mental equivalent of looking at the sky). For grounding you. Work is all about politics, so I feel like I’m knee deep in it. So what it is?

Politics

Wiki says “Politics is the process by which groups of people make decisions.” It’s five types of power. Which one are you?

Legitimate power, the power of the policeman or the referee, is the power given to an individual by a recognized authority to enforce standards of behavior. Legitimate power is similar to coercive power in that unacceptable behavior is punished by fine or penalty.

At work Legitimate power is given to you by rank and proximity to power (CEO and down). 6 Degrees Of Blackberry. Oh, and Performance Reviews, which effect your bonuses. And Managers get first dibs on the holiday bungalows.

Referent power is bestowed upon individuals by virtue of accomplishment or attitude. Fulfillment of the desire to feel similar to a celebrity or a hero is the reward for obedience. This is an example of incentive power as one rewards oneself.

Referent power, hmmm, just read it and don’t quite understand. Seems like how much you feel like a Rap Star. I feel 25% like a Rap Star.

Expert power springs from education or experience. Following the lead of an expert is often rewarded with success. Note that expert power is conditional to circumstances (for example, if leaky pipes need to be repaired, a brain surgeon’s advice probably would not carry as much weight as a plumber’s).

Expert. I’m pretty good at some stuff, with computers. However, to move up-up in a Company is basically an exam. You get an MBA, you get a better job. At the high end it teaches you leadership, at the low its a rubber stamp.

But that’s just three. The primary colors of power are reward and punishment. They mix to form Legitimate, Referent and Expert power. Reward and punishment are basically operant conditioning. That’s basically associative learning and, in its mathematically pure form, neural networks. And neural networks are something you can build in the lab.

It’s interesting. Someday you could theoretically computerize politics. Through Facebook.

The English Speaking Elite:
  • Mahinda: This is sort of a forum, isn't it? What I mean is that Indi posts something, everyone has a quick read, then starts using this space to air their own views and spread their own message or start their own little (quite often completely unrelated) arguments or whatever... Its got an organic quality, which I think is quite nice......
  • The way of the Dodo: I think we should take some of this stuff and create a forum. That allows for better discussion and more mature dialog. What do you guys think...
  • Mahinda: Just curious... Didn't mean to offend....
Much More Mahinda:
  • Mahinda: Lousy, uninteresting comeback with only mild entertainment value. Where's the wit? Where's the logic/justification to the comment? I'm disappointed in you......
  • David Blacker: Mahinda, I doubt you'd make a good bench press, never mind a press sec....
  • Mahinda: Machang Blacker! Where have you been??! Were you busy washing your hair or something? Oh sorry - you don't have hair, no? So why the offensive attitude? Don't you think I'd make a good press sec? ;)...
The Final Cross:
  • Mahinda: Flyovers, if effectively used, are an excellent method of improving the flow of traffic and congestion. Since you guys don't think the ones that have been built work terribly well towards that objective, lets just blame Mahinda and the Government for this and move on :) Ok. That was just a little joke, but on a serious note, I think development should be well thought out and also implemented in the most cost effective manner. Which...
  • Anon: To add to what Dodo say, before the fly-over there was stop-go traffic at the Dehiwala junction. After the flyover there is a continuous, but slow flow of traffic. Although I use that road only rarely in my limited experience the length of the queue and the time taken to travel is no better after the flyover, and may be slightly worse. Moving the bus stand would be an improvement at Dehiwala, think Nugegoda is somewhat more...
  • Anon: Thanks Shammi, there was a very good interview in the Nation a few years back that opened my eyes to him. Think he did a fair job at the port and according to reports did not take a large "grant" that was in the offing. Agree with Dodo that Mangala's chances of getting elected at the moment look pretty slip....

Things Could Get Ugly

A group of Fonseka supporters were shot today in Tangalle. A mother of five was killed. Election violence has so far been not insane, though the Centre For Monitoring Election Violence reported 179 incidents as of the 11th. The name of that organization alone shows how inured we are to violence in campaigns, but it's just too sad when mothers and kids are killed in the course of the great game. Sadly, life and politics

Sarath Fonseka’s Dog

Sarath Fonseka's dog is a big dalmation. He's caged now, in the front garden of the family's rented house on Queen's Road. Anoma Fonseka is holding a press con, saying there's no men in the house. Her daughters are abroad. She's concerned for her husband's health as he languishes in jail. I try to get close to the dog but he barks at me. From a distance watch. He naps. He plays with a rock.

Ranil Abides

I stopped by the UNP office to pick up my check and lay a wreath on Prabhakaran's photo. I kid I kid. I just dropped by. They launched their manifesto yesterday, which was interesting besides Ranil's photo on the back. I was watching Big Lebowski recently and it's a bit like that. The John Goodman character is permanently stuck in the Vietnam era, making him borderline psychotic in the present day. Ranil's camp is stuck

Sarath’s Security

Read bits of Sarath's first press conference. It's OK. If he runs on cleaning up the government he may have a chance. I was ready to believe in him last week, but he went on about his house and security. On the latter issue, however, he has a point. The last military man to enter politics literally blew up. There is one scenario no one talks about (or can/should, really). I think Mahinda I would

For Women In Power, Today

Amma is working on something called lankawomen.net. It's a grassroots organization to encourage and support women in government. This is good for its own sake, but I think it also leads to better governance. I know many women out of power who still have it and get stuff done. This organization is cool cause it's starting from the local government level. They're meeting today, to quote, 'There will be a meeting on May 12, Tuesday
