Perfume

Saw this killer movie, Perfume (download torrent). Heard mixed review but from the beginning it was solid. The first scene is a fetid 17th century fishmarket, the filth on the floor mixed with the blood of a baby just popped. And that’s the hero, until you see. The film is about smell and thus the film making is enfused with sensuality – plums, flowers, shit, the maggots stirring inside a rat. Mostly darkness and stank, cause the kid has a hard life, but his talent for smell is amazing and compelling. So I liked him, admired for him, hoped for him – until he started killing and pickling virgins in the street. And then, aghast, I still kinda liked him. So it was a good, twitchy, beautiful film.

This trailer pretty much ruins it, FYI

The women in the film, the dead virgins, were absolute stunners. Not my type, but real beauties. The character reminded me of the modern Grendel in Beowulf (YouTube) – the unwitting demon, sympathetic in that – fundamentally – he just don’t know. This boy just has such an amazing sense of smell which you can feel – especially in the cinematic portrayal of the stanky squalor of 17th century France compared to oasis of the perfumerie.

At the same time, however, this talented and handsome lead is totally psychopathic. It’s a nice mix. I mean, one likes the extremes, to be appalled, but the splendor and art of scent is also compelling, in the opposite direction. I mean most of the people we enjoy watching on screen are murderers or criminals, though the guy in Perfume is a proper disturbing serial killer. But pretty. Good times, good times.

Perfume also has, by far, the best orgy scene I’ve ever witnessed.

The Military State Of Mind:
  • jcnars: @rubbish, you hit the coin. Indi seems to have sold his soul of late. Sucking up to the govt. like a pro. @girigor, talking loud doesn't always means talking sense. We are in a period between wars, if: a) nuts like you don't STFU and b) china is allowed a naval base in SL....

But for the sinhalese people, they find it good that the armed forces are around because almost all of them are sinhalese and past experience shows they will favour their own people, sadly. But for the Tamil people, they see it as an occupying force not interested in their welfare but only in holding real-estate. The coming days, months are...

Did Little Children Create God?:
  • Shammi: It's funny the way most of the stories and rituals in the bible have so much in common with legends of more ancient pagan civilizations. Bits of the tales of Gilgamesh, Dionysus et al are mirrored in the descriptioons of Noah, Moses, Jesus, the Holy Trinity and the holy family etc., even a trace of Solomon reflected in Mahoshada of the jataka tales. They could've been a little more creative at least. I think I'm...

  • Kids Say: No, little children didn't create god - insecure and ignorant people did. Believing in and worshipping a magical invisible creature in the sky gives a lot of people comfort and security. That said, little children can be wonderfully creative. Have you seen the show "Kids Say the Darndest Things"? (You can watch clips of the show on youtube). This sounds like something from that show: Christianity is the belief that a cosmic Jewish zombie who...

Othello:
  • Electra: Actually race has little to do with what Othello is actually about. Of course it does make an appearance here and there, but it's possible that the race theme has been slightly over-analysed (as is most of Shakespeare's work) by later interpreters. However - it deals with the equally potent themes of jealousy, obsession, paranoia, the idea of masculinity. To me those are the things that makes Othello a truly remarkable account of what is...

Hyderabad

Some cities require a guide. I would have thought Hyderabad was an urban sprawl, but from the right angle there is a fine filagree to the place. Literally, there's some very fine silver threading work in the bazaar. And shiny shiny bangles, and strong perfume. I still have some on my wrist, I smell it to counter the smog and waves of nauseau from too much biriyani. Maybe Hyderabad's a bit like that, you just

An Ode To Arrack

The timing and sequence of this is a little off, but it's a long weekend. Of course no one is drinking on Poya, but this weekend is also the Kandy Perahera. Whether it's to the memory of Lakshman Kadirgamar, Auntie Florie, or forgetfulness itself, I'm sure many a Sri Lankan will have a tipple. People here seem to love Red Label Scotch, though arrack is another standard. Arrack is a coconut

Open Mic: Thank You

Thank you to everyone, especially everyone who came out to read, and the Sansoni family, and Geoffrey Dobbs and the Galle Literary Festival, and everyone who came before. I got a bit tipped at the end and had to be trundled off in a cab, but I think it went off well. Near the end I couldn't stop talking, but I was really so very proud.
